Hi all,

Using Windows 7, Intel(R) HD Graphics (Core i3) with all DirectDraw, Direct 3D and AGP Texture accelerations enabled.
I can't seem to get videos to show up in pure data and get this error:

'unable to connect filters -2147220969'

I've tried .mov (quicktime) and (.avi).

If anyone has any advice for what's the optimal codecs/formats to use in my situation, I'd really appreciate it.

I did install QT but will go through these links and see if I can make it work. Seems like the best solution is to force pd_extended to use QT and somewhere in all this info, that becomes clear.

The codec/format of these video clips doesn't matter to me much. I'll make them anything that will play.

So, I'm likely going to go nuts.

I've tried every codec I can think of and pd even shows me this:

[pix_film]: DirectShow support
[pix_film]: QuickTime support
that it's open and loaded the file and...

GEM: GLEW version 1.5.4

Now, is there something in this GLEW comment that I should be wary of? Perhaps this needs updating based on my machine? It's hard to believe that it's so difficult to get a video or image to appear in a gemwin on Windows. I was doing this on a mac and it performed as expected.

Hey I have a very similar problem for an installation where we have to use a windows7 pc with pd-extended (!! yes I know it is not mantained anymore but worked fine in the computers of the school where we programmed the project, that were running windows10). I also installed QuickTime and tried many types of formats (.mov, .avi, .mp4) without being able to get an acceptable streaming rate ( using a counter to move the index box number for [pix_film] ). Now I think I will try [system] object with a cmd line message to see if it opens the videos with QuickTime. If anybody had some result mean while please tell me, also I would like to know if maybe pd2lork would help. Thanks for your attention and feedback

@misturapura Video streaming rate problems (stuttering etc.) are often because the audio buffer is too small.
Even when you are not using audio (Pd dsp off) and have no audio objects in your patch.

Audio always has priority over video....... so check your Audio Settings for Pd and increase the "Delay (msec):"..... and then decrease it again until you have problems and then increase it again by 1 (or more if that will be more comfortable)..... and save the settings.

If videos will not open at all then the Pd terminal window should tell you more...

as far as i know Gem is not running fully on 64bit versions including purr-data. for the QT vs DirectShow problem ,i hope i remember correct, there was a message to chose the backend by sending a message to [pix_film] -> [open /patch/to/filename.mov <nr_of_backend>( where <nr_of_backend> can be for example 0 or 2.

@zerino What is the file format that you are trying to use? Is it a compressed format?

For a .mov you could try putting these .dlls in the same folder as gem.dll
If you already have files with the same names there then move them somewhere safe first so that you can recover.......

If you are only trying to manipulate video (not using gems other gems) there are other solutions....

That can both be controlled by OSC messages, and deal more easily with any audio track that is embedded.
VPT cannot be run at the same time on the same machine as Pd though........

i have tried serveral formats converted through ffmpeg:

.mov and .mp4 files encoded in h264 (libx264).
.mov files in DV and MJPEG codecs.
.webms in vp8
.mkv in h264

Goin to check these dlls, I already installed QT.

I´m actually studying PD to know exactly what I can do with it, so I'm not interested in using other apps, thank for the advice tough.
(I know vpx, but no the other one, goin to read about it) (I do have resolume available in my other machine, so I do have a tool for projecting video, I want to learn how to do it with PD).

well, actually gem looks like being loaded Ok, it just doesnt load the videos, check the screen shots Ive post above

How do I check my gem version? it came bundled with purr data so I'm not sure

I thoght that this extended view was some kind of external, didn't realize it were abstractions.

Still couldnt make GEM load videos in PURR-DATA on windows but could make it work on PD EXTENDED. Dont know why, but its working.

For Purr Data, put any dll files in the bin directory where pd.com and pd.exe are located.

@jancsika, I see that many Gem dll are already duplicated on the bin directory but I still have the same problem: no video could be loaded on a Windows10 machine....

On the same computer, I tried the last vanilla + Gem 0.94 64bit (from deken) and it works well.

So I tried to replace this working Gem in Purr data (like I did on OSX which works perfectly!) but I see that only 32bit Purr data is available for windows...

Pro-Tip: Make sure you have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed.

Pro: It worked for me (both pd-vanilla + Gem and Purr Data). Win10.
Con: Not FLOSS.

Yes, I read that and installed K-lite already.

On the same machine, I can read any kind of video files / container (avi, mov's h264, mp4,..) with vanilla 0.50 + Gem 0.94 from deken (64bit only?).

But Gem on Purr Data can't read any video.

On this bug report a user reported that the K-Lite Codec Pack worked to load the relevant file formats.

For me only with Gem 0.94.
