Hi,

I am working through the [http://www.pd-tutorial.com/english/ch02s02.html](link url) and on "2.2.2.1.10 Demultiplex" it shows that there is a "demux" object, but I can't make it work, it just doesn't become a proper object with inlets and out lets, just the usual dashes to show its not recognised as an object.

Why would it be in the tutorial and not work in the program itself.

Also I thought I had installed "pd-extra" but now I can't find it in "synaptic package manager".

Can any one help?

@pharaoh-sean It is part of the zexy Library.
If you open the help tab in pd and click "Find Externals" and search for zexy it should find the correct one for your system and install it correctly.
Nearly all the tutorials were written when a version of Pd called Extended was current. It included all the libraries available at the time. Nowadays you have to install them into your "Vanilla" Pd as required.

I tried installing all of the "zexy" libraries, but none of them made the object "demux" work.

@pharaoh-sean After installing Zexy via Deken,

try adding zexy to File > Preferences > Libraries

or add
[declare -lib zexy]
beforehand
[demux]
in your patch.

In File > Preferences > Searchpaths should be PD's /extra folder, and the library should be inside of that folder, of course.

I have less problem to open the object:
[zexy/demultiplex] or {zexy/demultiplex~]
than its alias:
[zexy/demux] or [zexy/demux~]

In pure data I looked at:

file>preferences> (where is "libraries")

Also I looked at my "pd-extras" folder:

/home/computer/Desktop/pd-extras/zexy

It does contain the "demux" object.

And it looked fine.

So why would it sit in that folder and still not be an object in pd?

Also I tried your object [declare -lib zexy],

however

although that formed an object,

the object {demux} still didn't work.

@pharaoh-sean The object should be re-created after [declare -lib zexy]. Should work.

@pharaoh-sean Deken should have set all these zexy libraries to load at startup.....

I think it needs all of them to run successfully.
If you have the wrong version of zexy for either your machine (64-bit only? or 32/64?) or Pd (64/32?) that could cause problems...... but Deken should only have shown you the correct choice.

ingox - typed "declare -lib zexy" in to pure data and it forms an object with no inlets or outlets.

I clicked on it in"run time" and then put "demux 0 1 2 3" and that term still didn't show up as an object.

whale-av - synaptic package manager shows I have "deken" but I can't find it any where in my menu list.

How do I find it?

And please read how to deal with externals in the manual: help > manual > chapter 4 externals
To be sure, delete the zexy folder in /extra before reinstalling it with Deken

(Also, I'd recommend to download the latest version of PD Vanilla from here https://puredata.info/downloads
or there http://msp.ucsd.edu/software.html
instead of using possibly outdated repositories (i.e. Synaptics). But this is unrelated to your question. )

So is "find externals" the same as deken? Or is deken the operating system's browser?

Also I visited https://puredata.info/downloads and the other link for downloads of the latest vanilla-pd. However there were no downloads for Linux mint or Ubuntu.

How do I install the latest version of vanilla PD (or pd-extra) if i use Linux Mint?

The point is I can see in "desktop>pd-extras>zexy>demux-help.pd"?

Why wouldn't it work if it was right there?

Also the help file for "demux" shows it as a dash surrounded object even in the help file.

It is however different because in the help file it has inlets and outlets while my "demux" (in the pure data patch window) does not have any inlets or out lets, (just closed dashes).

@pharaoh-sean Yes..... "Find Externals" invokes the Deken Plugin that does the work of finding and installing externals "behind the scene".
When it asks where to install either let it make the decision or modify the path to ensure it is installed in the extra folder. It will remove a previous installation and should set up the Library to work. You will have to re-start Pd for the Library to be found as Pd starts.
To update to the latest available vanilla for your linux os you should use apt-get I think.

I found that I have one "pd-extras" on my desktop and another "pd-extras" on my "home" folder.

I switched paths and re-started pd but "demux" still didn't work.

I seem to be missing at least "zexy/0x2e", but don't know where to find it.

I found a zip file for "deken" but i havent got a clue what to type in.

I have tried to install extras in the "help>find externals" window - zexy 1 2 3 4 5 6. Still didn't work.

Can you please tell me what exactly I should type in to the linux terminal to get the latest "pd/extendeded edition" for linux mint:

apt-get...?

Can any one explain whats going on here? I have a working "demux" in the help file but it won't work on the "stage"? How can it work in the help file but not on the "stage"?

Also i have found that although "demux" in the help file has inlets and outlets, it still doesn't trigger any of the print objects? Why not?

@pharaoh-sean The inlets and outlets sort of "cling on" even when the object will not create because they were there when the help file was made.
For "Find externals" (which is Deken in fact) you should just search for just simply ....... zexy
If you are unsure which one (sometimes there is a choice) then post a screenshot of what it offers.
If it says...... cannot be found..... then you could install extended..... this could help (ignore that it says Ubuntu and look at Gilberto's post)...... https://forum.pdpatchrepo.info/topic/9161/how-can-i-install-pd-extended-on-ubuntu-14-10
If still no good you would have to compile from source...... http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended which is usually easy in Linux......... BUT it will be 32-bit so if you are running a 64-bit only OS then it will not work.

Or of course compile zexy from source...... https://git.iem.at/pd/zexy/

If you just really need [demux] and only [demux] I have made you a simple abstraction to do the same thing.
You will have to look inside and change it if you need for example [demux 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8]
I made it for [demux 1 2 3 4]
You would just need to change the [route 0 1 2 3] to [route 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7] and add another 4 outlets.

I read the "Gilberto's post" and got this:

Also I tried adding your demux object to my zexy folder, but it still won't work.

@pharaoh-sean Pd extended is not supported anymore and discouraged to use.

This should work:

1. Have the current vanilla Pd version
2. Go to Help -> Find externals
3. Type in "zexy" and install the top result
4. Open a new patch and create the object [declare -lib zexy]
5. Create the object [demux]

If this works there is a way to load zexy automatically on startup, but please try this first.

@pharaoh-sean But if my abstraction is not working then Pd is not finding the extra folder at all.
Go to Pd preferences (in the top menu) and add the path to root/....../pd/extra and if my abstraction still doesn't work add the path to root/......./pd/extra/zexy
You might find with @ingox instructions and setting the path the zexy library will then load...... and if so you should remove my abstraction because it will cause confusion as I gave it the same name as the zexy object.
If not then at least my abstraction will do the job.

BUT
Reading back through this thread I think your path settings are probably the problem.
Pd searches automatically the path root/....../pd/extra
That is the standard path for externals. And that "pd" folder is the one that also has a folder "bin" inside it. Pd (out of the box) does not look anywhere else for objects you want to create unless you set a path
It will not find root/........./?/?/pd-extras unless you set the path.

Open (from the Pd top menu) File....preferences... path...
Then set a path to wherever your zexy library is and restart Pd.
It should then work.

Note...... Pd will find objects in the same folder as the patch you open..... without you needing to set the path to that folder.
You put my [demux] abstraction in your zexy folder.
You can test zexy [demux] by going into your zexy folder and opening [demux-help]
It will either load the real [demux] if the zexy library is working...... or my abstraction if it is not.
If you can "open" the [demux] object when right clicking it....... it is my abstraction. If you do not see the option to "open" it then zexy is working.
