Last week I was walking on the beach and instead of thinking
to vacations or how to make wonderful sand castles
I started thinking to PD and how to recreate
that environment. Yes, I know, this is the no-return point :-0

Attached is a first attempt to emulate it...
Not totally effective, so if you have suggestions...

i just got back from the beach last night too. your emulation does sound quite close to the real thing. good job!

possible improvements:

1. the waves come too quickly. i think you only need half as many.

2. the stereo spread is too severe. usually waves are quite wide, so they will fill up a fair bit of the stereo space. also, some of your waves seem to 'pingpong' across the stero field...which would never actually happen in nature. they generally break left to right or vice versa...and in a lot of cases you will get waves that break from both the left and right, and then finally break together with a boost of energy at the midpoint.

my wife just said "are you watching a surfing video?" ..so i reckon you're pretty close to the mark

3. breaking waves.

your waves all just lap up on the sand. but for some real surf action, you need to get the sound of breaking waves. I think that would be more of a low frequency grumbly sound mixed with a crack when the wave breaks.

just wanted to say that i am really impressed by this though. way better than anything i could do..and as a surfer i really like this sound!

yes, too many waves, now there is a "density" parameter
and the pan spread is reduced by default...

Next step: I definitely need a seagull simulator now

Yes, you get simiral results but maxmsp is a commercial product and i think it's not so good as puredata but it has a better GUI.

not hard to have a better gui than pd

And then there's the (much) better asio implementation => byebye latency issues. This is probably not an issue for those who use pd for installation/arty stuff (the majority of pd users?), but for those who want to make music with pd (e.g. to record live loops) it's a serious pita. I'm still learning to play guitar 50ms ahead of the groove

Wished the pd devs could fix that one.
