Hi,
I am on mac os Monterey and pd 0-54-1.

Randomly can not edit, have to close and reopen subpatch. Happens quite freqently.

Anyone else have this problem?

It happens with pd-0.55-0 too.

I am using [pd-mypatch vis $1( on the parent sub patches.

@cfry What do you mean by can't edit? Will it not go into edit mode or will it but you just can't interact? You could try also sending the editmode 1 message to the subpatch along with the vis 1 message.

It goes into edit mode but I can not interact.

I switch between edit and performance mode all the time when I code.

@cfry this sounds familiar! i experienced this with pd 0.54-1 and also now with pd 0.55-0 here on macOS Sonoma (and IIRC not only for subpatches, but also for the parent patch).

i never reported it yet though since i did not find a way of properly reproducing it. and although it's quite annoying, i got used to it ... what i keep doing in that case is switching to another window and back and then i can use the Cmd+E shortcut again.

would still be great to get this fixed in an upcoming release! - so if you (or anyone else obviously) find a way to reliably reproduce this, i'd be glad to create an issue.

following up on this since i think i have a way to reliably reproduce this weird state with a very simple example:

1. create new patch
2. add [pd foo] subpatch
3. add some random object in the subpatch - for example a [bla( message
4. Cmd+Click in the parent window (i do this a lot normally to control sliders etc. - and it preserves the focus on the subpatch window)
5. now try to edit in the subpatch (selecting the text in the message or moving it). try again by switching to between edit- and perform-mode via Cmd+E ... try once more and see how perform mode now has the "edit cursor" (hand) and the edit mode has the regular mouse pointer.

another detail is that when creating another object via shortcut (e.g. Cmd+1) in this state creates the object at the default position on the top left. can you confirm this with your setup, @cfry?

EDIT: after testing a bit more, it seems like the actual point here is the Cmd+Click in another window. this also creates this state for me in the parent window if i Cmd+Click in the subpatch or in another patch.

@cfry can you confirm these steps to reproduce the problem?

i investigated a bit further now, trying to find when this issue was introduced. turns out that it seems to be related to the Tcl/Tk version. if i compile Pd 0.55.0 with Wish-8.6.12, i get a build that works perfectly fine. The official build includes Wish-8.6.13 though afaik - and in this case and for Wish-8.6.14, the issue appears.

i will use a local build for now (unless i'll experience wish-related other issues).

@cfry no worries! this will probably take a bit of time to tackle anyway since I wouldn't know how to approach a tcl fix there (if it can be fixed on the Pd side at all). I did report it on github. but when you find time, it would be great to have your data as well to back up my assumptions.

adding here that i need to revise this statement:

... with this build, the switch between edit- and perform-mode do work as stated, but somehow, clicks sometimes are just ignored. this happens in both modes (and in the "temporary perform mode" with Cmd+Click). and since this is not an issue with Pd 0.53-2, there does seem to be some issue through changes on the Pd side.

Tested with:

1. [hradio] where i'm just clicking through all states: sometimes the state just doesn't change
2. alternately clicking inside a [+ ] object to edit it and outside to deselect: sometimes, it doesn't select the object text and sometimes it doesn't deselect the object.

EDIT: my assumption was also wrong that this other issue is not a case with Pd 0.53-2. seems like there is only the choice between the 2 issues, depending on the Wish version. :/
