There's an example in the doc files which shows two arrays being displayed in the same graph or canvass (see "16.more.arrays.pd" in "C:\Program Files\Pd\doc\2.control.examples", at least under Windows). I'd like to do something similar, but I can't figure out how to initially create the two arrays in one graph. It's probably very simple, but so far, it escapes me. Has anyone tried this?

@dfkettle You might not see it straight away........ if you open (click open on the array to see the graph) and then close the graph the new name will appear above the array.

@RT-Chris Yes, that works. But I was actually looking for some way to do this using the [array define] object. I've googled for some option that might do this, either through a creation argument or sending it a message, but haven't found anything. Maybe it just isn't possible, although you would think that if it can be done using the Put menu, there'd also be a way to do it programmatically.

Actually, there does seem to be one problem. I don't seem to be able to edit the contents of the array with the mouse if I have more than one array displayed in the graph. The example provided in the installed documentation, "16.more.arrays.pd", has this problem too. even though I turned editing on by sending it a message, 'array97 edit 1'. Maybe editing isn't supposed to work if you have more than one array displayed (which one would you be editing, or would you be editing both at the same time?).

@dfkettle Yes, you can not edit the array if there is more than one, but you can exploit transparency and have one of the arrays editable by placing one array on top of the other. The bottom most array will be editable with the mouse. To avoid name overlap you can put non-printing spaces before one name to shift it to the right or just hide them and use comments for your labels.

@dfkettle Ok, fixed it, mostly. For some reason it does not update when click and dragging until the next click. Missing something obvious most likely. Would not be difficult to expand it to more arrays or even make it into an abstraction for more ease of use, but that will be for someone else to do.

Edit: the two messages at the bottom right dynamically create the array which the mouse interacts with, the space is 5 non-printing spaces so the name is not visible, next is the array size, float sets the array to use floats (?) and the last digit is the type of array, 1 is polygon, 2 is points, 3 is bezier, size for polygon and bezier need to be array+1 for things to align correctly, hence their being 11. This has the same issues with arrays of different sizes as you normally have when putting multiple arrarys in one. This can be fixed by using separate arrays which also would make it easier to make this an abstraction.

@oid It works well in windows Pd 0.50 using the mouse on the graphs (without else/mouse).
The mouse grabs and updates the graph straight away without any extra clicks.
Array update problems can often be solved using the "ping" message from [r pd].

@whale-av I think I might have a bug or a mouse issue on my computer. I can suddenly edit multiple arrays on a single graph without any extra stuff, and my patch barely works at all. I would say the bug is with me, but @dfkettle also can/could not edit graphs with multiple arrays and I do not know how I could miss it since the cursor switches to a left hand cursor if you even get near a line.

@oid Please post the patch where you can modify multiple arrays with one click.

@oid I tried your patch ("Untitled-1.pd") under PD v0.52.1 and WIndows 7 (64-bit), but the display behaves strangely when I edit it. It appears to contain 3 arrays after editing. I don't fully understand what you're doing in the patch, but I'll study it a bit more.

@dfkettle That is the issue with it not updating until after you click one last time, not sure why it does that and it does not always do that. I also played with making an abstraction which never has this issue despite being the same patch with the only edits/new parts playing no role in that odd behavior. But it has it's own problems, mainly did it to get better acquainted with graphs which I hardly ever use. You should be able to edit graphs with multiple arrays without this, it just can be difficult to know which you are editing at times, unlike a graph with a single array you need to put the mouse right on the line. As I said elsewhere in this thread, there may be a bug with this, I get erratic behavior and before yesterday I never had it work, not that I tried much. Have yet to figure out if this is an issue with me, pd, or my computer.

@oid It updates OK, I don't have to click one more time, except that it doesn't erase the old contents. And when I click on the radio button to select the other array, it just reverts to the original contents (my edit disappears).

@dfkettle it was mostly used for testing so I could keep the pd window from being filled with errors, mostly needed for the abstraction version since it will at times have no arrays to compare and would then throw errors. I will upload the abstraction later, it works better and makes it easy to have as many arrays as you want, it just has one bug which I have not gotten around too dealing with.

I decided to redesign the thing, taking a different approach. Rather than try to display two arrays in the same graph, I defined one array (named "$1-array"), the only one which actually gets displayed, using the Put menu. Then I defined two other arrays (named "$1-velocity" and "$1-duration") using [array define], and a horizontal radio button to allow the user to select which of the two arrays to display. When the user clicks on one of the radio button selections, it saves the current contents of $1-array and then copies the contents of the selected array into $1-array.

It works the first time I open the patch, but when I go to close it, PD asks me if I want to save my changes (even though I didn't make any changes, except to the data in the arrays. I don't have "Save contents" checked either. If I say "No", I can open the patch again and it still works. But if I say "Yes", it replaces the original name of the displayed array ("$1-array") with the actual number (for example, "1150-array", as in the screen print below) inside the patch. I'm not sure why it's doing this, or if it's expected behaviour. It doesn't over-write the names of the other two arrays ($1-velocity and $1-duration) inside the patch, though. Any ideas?

The whole thing is getting a little complicated, so I've uploaded the parent patch ("test-array-abs.pd") and the abstraction containing the arrays ("array-abs.pd"). This is the line in "array-abs.pd" that gets changed if I say "Yes". Of course, I could try to remember never to say "Yes", but that's a bit much to ask of the user, I think. And it's kind of annoying to have to answer in the first place.
