I am on to my next wish. To be able to send messages to other devices via my patch on my computer. I see the netsend and netreceive. Is that the way to do it? If so, I assume I need Pd on all other devices? Then I need to have them all on the same network?

Is there another way? I was thinking you might be able to use shell and make a script, but shell often seems to add digital artifacts when a sound is playing. Is there another way?

Essentially, I want to:

1: Inform performers when to change what they are doing.
2: Provide the performers an opportunity to tell the system simple directions.

However, all sound will be generated from the patch and this is without a performer manning the computer.

I hope this makes sense. Help.

@raynovich It's going to depend upon the app you want to send to. It might be able to send and receive OSC if you are lucky. It might have some other proprietary messaging format.

So TouchOSC or some free Android OSC program will be easiest.

The networking part is usually simple nowadays..... except that the smallest error setting it up will be a fail.
Anyway, tell us more.......
Are you going to provide the devices or will they use their phones for example.

Thanks for the response. I am open to suggestions. I was hoping to do something that is easy and they could use their phones as their devices. I am unfamiliar with TouchOSC and will look into this. So, time to get to work on this.

@raynovich I imagine they could have either Android or iPhone devices (hopefully not windows as there are fewer options).
TouchOsc is available for both at a small cost ($5?). and layouts can be made easily. Labels can receive messages and their contents and colours can be changed from Pd.
Buttons, faders knobs xy pads etc can also have their colours and labels changed with messages from Pd and can be used to control functions in Pd and also send midi messages.
There can be multiple pages of controls and labels.
The only other extra apart from the laptop running Pd is a Wi-Fi router for the communications.
Layouts for the panels for their phones can be sent from your computer to their phones over the Wi-Fi once they have TouchOSC installed.

If they are musicians or VJ's they might already have the app for controlling Logic, VIZ, FL Studio, Live, BeatMachine etc..... https://osculator.net/forum/forum/support/mobile-apps-ios-android/touchosc-layouts/page3.......

I see that program. Yeah, it is $5. So, if I want to send a simply message to the iphone this is the best way? Or if I wanted to send the phone a message.

I am not looking to send lots of information. Simple yes, no, maybe answers. And such. Or a message like, start playing. Or stop playing to the iphone. I maybe think the website Kahoot and send simple commands back to the computer. I could perhaps use some kind of bluetooth devices to send messages back to the computer.

@raynovich Maybe MobMuPlat is another option, connected to the main patch via local network and OSC.

@ingox Yes it looks like Mobmuplat can post messages now so it is an option.
@raynovich Bluetooth range could be a problem on stage..... and especially off stage if they wander about.

Ok, looking at MobMuPlat, it is interesting, very interesting, but it is not really doing what I want, I think.

Can an iphone with MobMuPlat send information to a PD app on a laptop?

How does LANdini work?

So, I think I would like to use Ping and Connect. I have uploaded to my iPhone 6 the MobMuPlat and I have it on my Apple computer. I am trying to get the two to communicate and cannot figure out how to get them to communicate.

The "wrapper" is the important part of Pd that deals with the comms for the Mobmuplat app.
The original "wrapper" was 32-bit MrPeach and I don't know whether it has been updated....
That thread might help..... it was a bit long but got there in the end.
There are some patches toward the end that worked for a "grid" and you could use for testing in Vanilla.

Ok, so I am trying to read this and figure out something that is probably much simpler than I am making it.

I have MobMuPlat loaded on my phone. I made the simple Sine wave slider app on my laptop. I then made the correct Pure Data file to play the pitch on the computer. The MobMuPlat file works and activates the file on my computer. Great.

I put the MobMuPlat file on my iPhone, and the file opens and looks correct. Great. I open the MobMuPlat file on my iPhone. I tried to connect my iPhone to my AT&T WiFI router which is the same as my laptop. They are not seemingly communicating. I connected my iPhone to my laptop via Bluetooth. Still no communication.

I am trying to understand the Multicast and Direct, Ping & Connect, and LANdini. Tried going back and forth between them and cannot seem to figure out how to figure out how to make progress on this problem.

Again, to clarify, I would love to be able to activate the Pure Data program from a different device. Maybe this is beyond my skills, but I cannot figure out how to detect how PD is receiving information. I am trying to figure out how to test the Pink & Connect or LANdini.

Can this help to figure out what I am doing wrong?

It runs a Pd patch on a phone...... but doesn't communicate with anything else over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
It just runs a Pd patch on the phone.
So it will not do what you are looking for.

The osc messages in the wrapper are purely for testing the Pd patch before uploading it to the Mobmuplat app.

So you will have to look for free osc apps for apple and android if you don't want to use TouchOSC.

The only other way I can think of at the moment would be to use a VNC app on the phone and share the computer desktop. I will google some more looking for other solutions when I get time.

It runs a web server on your computer that can communicate via osc with puredata (or any software). You can then control your patch from a iphone / android via a simple web browser. (Local network AFAIK)

I am hoping to find a way around the crazy Mobmuplat internal comms........ but in the meantime here is a working solution....... control.zip

Put control.mmp and control.pd into the mobmuplat folder on your phone.
computer_control.pd runs on your computer.
Set mobmuplat to send to your computer Wi-Fi IP address.
Set computer_control.pd to send to your phone's IP address.

I cannot find any vanilla objects that will talk multicast address...... you would be stuck with 32-bit extended (mrpeach required) if you want to use that.
This with extended will do it (talking with "Tutorial 4 Networking" if you set the network to 224.224.224.1 in mobmuplat....... udpreceive-help.pd

"control" is proof of concept..... simple and probably not the best way..........

OK, some absolute success. Thank you @whale-av! Now to figure out how to implement this easily.

@raynovich The simple way is to buy a second-hand router....... a Linksys WRT54 series can be found for about €10...... just for your project.
Then set the router with an SSID name, wireless security etc.
Then as you connect your phones and your computer choose to set static addresses. That will be remembered by the phones and the computer so that when they connect to this router in the future they will always have the same IP address.
Set them to "connect automatically".
So when you go out to a show and turn on the router all the devices will connect exactly as they did the last time.

Without multicast you will need to set each mobmuplat app to send to a different port (but always the same IP). In [computer_control] you will need a [netreceive] for each of those ports....... and a [netsend] for each phone IP (but always the same port)....
