I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience trying to run a pd patch on a smartphone which is running UBUNTU TOUCH

I'm not too fussed about the programming side of things as I'm happy doing that on my laptop but I'd like to run pre-made patches with GUI's on there if possible. this way I can permanently fix the smartphone into an enclosure I'm building for a pd/arduino project... thus giving me the SBC and the touchscreen interface all-in-one and for a very modest price.

I know there is mobmuplat on android... perhaps this might work??? I also noticed in the pd downloads page there are two versions of extended for raspbian (ARM) so perhaps seeing as the phone i've just bought has a cortex a7, this might work. It doesn't arrive till next wednesday tho so am unable to try just yet.

Just looking at my options I guess... if it's not possible I can always just leave android on there and use mobmuplat but I've been wanting to have a butchers at ubuntu touch for ages and now seems like a good opportunity

@liamorourke Cost mounts up quickly with projects made from bits.
I think the cheapest is still a s/h small lightweight windows laptop...... $100...... and TouchOsc https://hexler.net/products/touchosc on your phone.... $4.99
Or an RPI instead of the laptop if you must, but if you need to edit on the move then you shoot straight above the laptop price...... or you have to carry another computer.
The phone keeps you mobile..... and a windows laptop gives you most software and a lot of IO and compatibility for free.
Or you can put Linux on it if you wish.

thanks David... the idea is to program the sketch on my laptop and then permanently install the phone (running the sketch) into the enclosure that i'm building. The phone only cost £24 on ebay (including delivery) which is good for a quad-core processor. It was cheap because of a small (almost insignificant) crack on the screen. But a replacement screen only costs a couple of quid so I think once everything's up and running I will probably sort that out. It only has one gig of RAM but I'm planning to set up a swap partition on an SD card to boost it a bit.

and it means I already have the touchscreen that I need set up. Plus using a phone will take up a lot less space inside my enclosure than a laptop. Not sure if that's what you meant or not.

In fairness I'm pretty settled on what I'm doing hardware-wise I'm really just wondering whether or not PD will run on UBUNTU TOUCH or should I keep the phone on Android and run mobmuplat?

@liamorourke If there is enough ram Ubuntu Touch runs alongside Android on the same Kernel, and Pd will run in Ubuntu. It might be possible to compile specifically for the device with "make".
But you might need to use Purr Data if you want MultiTouch https://forum.pdpatchrepo.info/topic/11807/purr-data-multitouch/11 . Things are changing fast so that might no longer be true.
How are you getting IO connection from the phone? Midi, Audio etc.

my plan is to try arduino via an otg connector cable as shown here:

i will then obviously need some kind of usb split to enable me to charge the phone through the same port without needing to open the enclosure up to unplug the arduino and plug in the charge cable.

good luck with that, my phone never let me charge while doing some otg stuff (usb midi on my side). Maybe you need to root the phone (mine is a sumsung nexus s6.

I'm sure I'll find a work around. worst case scenario is I'll install a switch next to the micro usb to toggle between 'charge mode' and user mode. then just run the device off battery when in use.... but like I say that's the WORST case scenario

I should potentially be able to run 5v from the arduino through the otg and then use the power jack on that instead. but i think that's approaching a discussion for the arduino forum.

@liamorourke Wireless charging if the phone has the contacts next to the battery.
It might be possible to charge directly (non-wireless) through those contacts as well as the phone will have a rectifier between the contacts and the charge circuit..... and just applying 5V dc could work. Need to look at the QI spec.

that's a nice idea actually David. bypassing the arduino and the usb port altogether with a connection straight to the phones PSU/ charge circuit would certainly be the most direct approach... and without any extra coding in the arduino sketch. thanks

I just got my otg cable through in the post and my arduino links up to android and uploads working sketches straight away. well happy about that. gonna start trying out some control of puredata on mobmuplat tomorrow morning
