Hi everyone,

well suddenly PD doesn't work. on my Mac Book Pro OS 10.8,
I've been using 0.43.4 extended for almost 2 years now,
first time it happens, it just wont start.

Tried:

• replacing the app with a new download
• resetting preferences from command terminal

Still not working.
Any ideas?

Yeah, problem is I have no idea about what to change inside the file,

@montremonson The rest of the contents of the file don't matter (for Pd), and in fact some of this doesn't matter either. Normally you should have:

127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost

in the file.
The first two lines are important for Pd, and if they have been changed (at all) then you should change them back. They are the setup for IPv4 localhost. The second two lines are for IPv6, and will be important in the future.

The lines are ok, just checked them, they are exactly as you wrote,

really strange, all other apps work perfectly,

I also upgraded to OSX 10.10 just in case but no solution either,

For those who just entered the thread:

• PD doesn't launch on my MAcBook pro OSX 10.10,
  (I've been using it 100% ok for two years)
• host file seems ok
• threw away org.pd files as suggested
• also tried deleting and re installing application
• every thing else works fine on the computer

any more ideas would be greately appreciated as I am working on a project which requires PD on my laptop

I have a file /private/etc/networks that contains the following:

@seb-harmonik.ar Yes, your link to pipermail is interesting. Maybe apple are also preparing for the IPv6 revolution. In windows7 the localhost is now commented, and it is looped back by the dns resolver. Microsoft say that this is to facilitate a smooth changeover to IPv6 as the IPv4 stack can be disabled remotely by a system admin. This still works fine for Pd and every other app that I have that uses localhost..
Your private/etc/networks file looks perfectly normal.

@montremonson Please et us know if you can successfully ping 127.0.0.1 from a terminal window, and also localhost. Could you please post your private/etc/hosts file?
However the file can look the same without being the same. A "tab" is not the same as five "space"s, and there are a number of different ansi codes that appear on the screen as a "space".

I think that you should consider completely overwriting it with a clean copy. This is marginally complicated by the permissions required, but here is some better help. There is no danger, as the file should not in any case have been altered from its clean original state. However, some "ad-aware" or other software might have hacked it.

well seems we got something!
using TextWangler I overwrote hosts file copying the default data into it:

fe80::1%lo0     localhost

and PD started!

only problem is that when I restart the computer
the host file is overwritten with the old data and back to the same problem,

Does anyone know how to avoid this?

@montremonson You are going to have to google around for that. Looking at your "old" hosts file, I would guess that you have an app (probably a vpn client), or more likely an add-in to safari (a sort of "parental control"), that is blocking websites by diverting them to localhost (and doing it badly).
This post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4006714 suggests locking the file once you have modified it. This will work unless you have given that other app your permission, or the system itself is doing the overwrite.
If you read that, it suggests simply deleting any other hosts files that you find, and which could be the source file for the overwrite.
You did save the file when you had changed it?
