Pd-extended not working
Hi everyone,
well suddenly PD doesn't work. on my Mac Book Pro OS 10.8,
I've been using 0.43.4 extended for almost 2 years now,
first time it happens, it just wont start.

Still not working.
Any ideas?

EDIT: I trashed preferences and got PD back again!

We should maybe pin the answer (I am not sure what is the right solution for now, but I saw many people having this issue).

the problem is I don't have no Library/Preferences/ path inside /Users/username/
on my Mac Book,
so I can't erase it,

ok, finally I found and deleted all org.puredata files from /Library/Preferences
(Library folder is normally invisible in 10.8, to unhide it you need to type from the terminal the following command: chflags nohidden ~/Library/ )
but problem persists: PD icon bounces then goes away,
still no more PD for me!
@montremonson Well I am not even sure if erasing the preferences will fix your problem... It might be related to an Mac OS X update (no more X11 ?!). Anyway here's the location of the preference on Mac :

On Mac OS X the settings are stored via the native defaults system which stores things in plist files. (i.e. ~/Library/Preferences/org.puredata.pd.plist). You can edit them with the command line util defaults, like defaults read org.puredata.pd. For Pd-vanilla, they are stored in org.puredata.pd. For Pd-extended, they are stored in org.puredata.pdextended.
Also you can try to launch pd from the command line (ie: pd-extended -stderr)?

1 other thing to try: right-click on the app and select "open" rather than double-clicking? perhaps it has something to do with gatekeeper?
I doubt it's an X11 thing, I no longer have X11 on OS X and Pd's working fine.
What happens when you launch the program from the command line as @EEight suggests? (the way to do this is open Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities folder, then type /Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd and hit enter)
please post the contents of the Terminal (any error messages, etc. if you don't get it to work.

trying form OPEN didn't work either,
in tried lauching Pd from terminal,
Pd icon starts to bounce and I get the following message:

@montremonson Is there a new "firewall" in osx (sorry, I gave up on osx a long time ago), that is stopping Pd connecting to it's gui through that localhost port?
Otherwise pd startup problems are (in my experience in Windows) caused by bad audio settings. Can you try to start it with the -noaudio flag.....?

Do a search on that page for "localhost"............. and you will find a section "PD does not launch / bouncing in the dock" which tells you what your localhost settings need to be...... (it is most likely that your settings for localhost are wrong/corrupt).
Then, if you still get no-where............
try "-noprefs" flag and if that works then go to Edit..Preferences and reset defauts......
......if still nothing happens then try " -nogui" flag and see if there are errors....

@montremonson The rest of the contents of the file don't matter (for Pd), and in fact some of this doesn't matter either. Normally you should have:
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
in the file.
The first two lines are important for Pd, and if they have been changed (at all) then you should change them back. They are the setup for IPv4 localhost. The second two lines are for IPv6, and will be important in the future.

really strange, all other apps work perfectly,
I also upgraded to OSX 10.10 just in case but no solution either,

@seb-harmonik.ar Yes, your link to pipermail is interesting. Maybe apple are also preparing for the IPv6 revolution. In windows7 the localhost is now commented, and it is looped back by the dns resolver. Microsoft say that this is to facilitate a smooth changeover to IPv6 as the IPv4 stack can be disabled remotely by a system admin. This still works fine for Pd and every other app that I have that uses localhost..
Your private/etc/networks file looks perfectly normal.
@montremonson Please et us know if you can successfully ping 127.0.0.1 from a terminal window, and also localhost. Could you please post your private/etc/hosts file?
However the file can look the same without being the same. A "tab" is not the same as five "space"s, and there are a number of different ansi codes that appear on the screen as a "space".
I think that you should consider completely overwriting it with a clean copy. This is marginally complicated by the permissions required, but here is some better help. There is no danger, as the file should not in any case have been altered from its clean original state. However, some "ad-aware" or other software might have hacked it.

well seems we got something!
using TextWangler I overwrote hosts file copying the default data into it:

and PD started!
only problem is that when I restart the computer
the host file is overwritten with the old data and back to the same problem,
Does anyone know how to avoid this?

@montremonson You are going to have to google around for that. Looking at your "old" hosts file, I would guess that you have an app (probably a vpn client), or more likely an add-in to safari (a sort of "parental control"), that is blocking websites by diverting them to localhost (and doing it badly).
This post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4006714 suggests locking the file once you have modified it. This will work unless you have given that other app your permission, or the system itself is doing the overwrite.
If you read that, it suggests simply deleting any other hosts files that you find, and which could be the source file for the overwrite.
You did save the file when you had changed it?
