i cant work out why there's a nasty amount of latency in pd which i dont get at all in cubase. i've noticed that whenever i start pd, the buffer size on my soundcard control panel gets set to 2048 no matter what it was set to before. is that anything to do with it?

anyone else had problems getting asio stuff to work properly in pd?

you can change your latency in the sound pref panel. I get 15ms with an ASIO motu. Not sure why the buffer size is reseting...

sound preferences? is that the same thing as audio settings? it has an option for delay, but if i set it to something below 70ms then it starts distorting horribly, as if its not using the asio drivers or something.

What driver do you use ?

you could have a look with ASIO4ALL drivers, it sometimes makes better results than common drivers, if you have a sound blaster LIVE kind of card there is the KXdrivers that do good job for me.

The delay setting you speak of is a buffer size, so it has in a division the computer can work with easily otherwise it will make all sorts of crazy interpolation distortion that sounds kinda like ring modulation. Try out 50, 25, and 15. With ASIO you really should be able to get down to 25 which is pretty acceptable.

i guessed this was the case but couldnt understand why it makes you specify it in ms. it should just give the usual options of powers of 2 etc. the delay in ms will give different values of buffer size depending on the samplerate won't it? maybe the distortion was due to the aliasing like you say, i'll try 25 and 15 etc, cheers for the advice.

i've had the same problem with m-audio firewire audiophile:its drivers work on 8ms. (more or less)
on jeskola buzz but with PD I couldnt go under 30 ms,both selecting or not ASIO in the audio pref.

i have the same issue!
I have a m-audio profire 610 and a intel duo core 3.00ghz with 3 gb of memory.

I work with other progams (cubase) with buffer size (256 sample) at 44100 and I have no problem. In pd extend this no longer happens because when using these specifications what I get is noise. the minimum at which I can work without having this problem is 100 msec delay corresponding to 4000..... buffersize. this makes no sense?

Since you're on windows, if you want to obtain a low latency, you really should try using asio drivers. Either you have these already for a specific audio interface, or if you're using the built in audio, you could try installing ASIO4ALL. However, there's no succes formula for pd/win to have low latencies, it's really a nasty matter of trial and error (some asio drivers e.g. aren't recognized, others won't make any difference, some audio interfaces are well suited, others aren't).

I will just mention that all my latency issues disappeared when I started to use pd vanilla. It solved both multichannel operation and high latency problems. I'm on winxp, audio interface is rme hdsp 9652.

Ok I had already read it but if i install pd Vanilla I lose all libraries in pd extended inclusive the gui objects. Am i wrong?

@litiec, If there are libraries you can't work without, you can always install them manually. Regarding gui objects, even [knob] works here. Btw, Vanilla helped me to learn pd better, I was forced to make my own little abstractions because they were not included in vanilla package. Good luck if you give it a try
