latest news: Ive successfully installed pd-extended on Ubuntu , including Gem and other libraries ,
they all works well !!

here's my whole process:

1,download and install the latest Ubuntu 8.10 intrepid , then update system up-to-date
2,download the right version for your sys , for me , choose pd-extended intrepid deb package , and just double click it and install , the deb package could auto-download and install the related files from your install source.
3,after install finished, you could run pd-extend from terminal. but here we met a new problem, cannot load Gem successful. // don't worry, we just leave little half step to rush the finishing line @@)
4,turn on terminal, update apt-get source : sudo apt-get update
5, still terminal : apt-get install gem // pd and Gem would be downloaded from you source ftp , after that , type "pd" in terminal , new pd running out it's window , but none libraries was loaded.(@#$%!@ Holy.!#$%)
6, this situation we met before, similar but actually very different. last time I installed 2 version of pd in different path, and make sys disorder . but this time , the same path. and what I've done is to uninstall pd in terminal : "sudo apt-get remove pd" ,
7, backing to the extended deb package we downloaded before, and install again.
8: run pd ... Gem and other packages loading successful !

conclusion: I guess maybe don't need so complex to work it out, the key point I think is to install Gem from source, and it would install any package that Gem must needed .

because less user on Mandriva , so I changed my sys to Ubuntu yesterday.
and here I met new prolbem for installing pd-extended for Ubuntu.

before I install pd-extended , I installed these packages first:

libasound2 (>> 1.0.12)
libc6 (>= 2.5-0ubuntu1)
libjack0.100.0-0 (>= 0.101.1)
dep: tcl8.4 (>= 8.4.5)
dep: tk8.4 (>= 8.4.5)

and when I run pd install , both Hardy and Gutsy that showed error here :
Gutsy ; Error:Dependency is not satisfiable: libgsl0
Hardy: Error:Dependency is not satisfiable: liblame0

I searched them in package manager , I thought they were both about the libraries that I've installed above.

I want to remove them all and reinstall , but in root terminal it report me 0 files has been removed .

so I removed all the pd folder in terminal

after that I reinstalled the extended-intrepid version . but
when I run in terminal , a report shows here:

priority 98 scheduling enabled.
sh: /usr/local/bin/pd-watchdog: not found
priority 96 scheduling enabled.
sh: /usr/local/bin/pd-gui: not found

and I think that because I removed pd-0.40.2 folder which I compiled before.

and then I'm searching from google ,that the files which we compiled that should be install and removed by checkinstall.

so I downloaded the package and installed in terminal .

but checkinstall failed ..

if you have pd-extended installed and no libraries are loaded, search for ".pdsettings"
it's a hidden file, most likely in your own folder. for example /home/billy

take a look at the file, you could try to remove it(or temporarily move it somewhere else). pd will use the default settings then, which could maybe do the trick.

Did you uninstall completely in the command line? Hopefully you used dpkg. Typing 'rm' is something you should avoid, especially as root. If you can't uninstall completely from the terminal you should certainly be able to use synaptic. If you need more help, please let us know what steps you have taken in as much detail as possible? Linux is all about the small stuff.

yap... that's what I had done before dpkg ..... so got lots unexpected problem @@

Fortunately this is a new OS , so .... I reinstalled ubuntu and formated all the disk including /usr , /home ...

so ... maybe it would work well or , backing to some steps that we met before.

Ok, so...

If you are a new linux user, here's what you should do: It sounds like you already re-installed Ubunto, correct?

1. Download the stable debian package from http://puredata.info/downloads.
2. Try to Install with dpkg, or gdebi(something like this?) package installer.
3. You'll probably have to satisfy some dependencies, install these, especially the -dev versions using Synaptic.
4. Once you've filled the dependencies, try installing again, it should work.
5. Ask questions, you may want to get things like GEM, and dataflow and OSC working. You're best bet with linux is to always ask detailed questions and get detailed answers.
6. Always make sure you know how to undo what you are about to do, and you'll be golden.

Sorry to rehash this thread but I ran into the same problem with GEM and found the quick fix.

running:
sudo apt-get install libftgl2

in the command line fixed it all for me.
