Hey all,
when i install GEM, it seems to work (be bussy anyway- it extracts a bunch of files and, after i edit the installer to have the right path to find PD, appears to be doing things there (patching it?)) but- after the install its... not installed? objects from GEM are not recognized (if i create them, they have dotted outlines just like if you create a gyberish object, instead of ports)- also, if i run examples that come with GEM they don't work- i get errors like this:
"gemhead
... couldn't create
sphere
... couldn't create
gemhead
... couldn't create
light
... couldn't create"
So- i know this is a really beginner issue, but whats going on? is there a tutorial or better instructions somewhere on how to iunstall GEM and get started? thanks everyone!
Bryan

Newb can't use GEM

What platform are you on?
-
oh, yeah. sorry about that, I'm using XP Pro 2002 (service pack 2). Thanks!

make sure you are specifying gem as a library to load in your command line. i have a batch file for when i want gem to start up that looks something like this:
REM pdgem.bat
pd -lib gem <insert any other parameters here>
also, you'll know if gem is loading when you start Pd if you see something like this in your console window (ie. dos prompt)
GEM: Graphics Environment for Multimedia
GEM: ver: 0.90
GEM: compiled: Aug 3 2004
GEM: maintained by IOhannes m zmoelnig
GEM: Authors : Mark Danks (original version on irix/windows)
GEM: Chris Clepper (macOS-X)
GEM: Daniel Heckenberg (windows)
GEM: James Tittle (macOS-X)
GEM: IOhannes m zmoelnig (linux/windows)
if that isn't happening, you have some type of problem that could be with the path where GEM is installed, or a problem with the installation. if that is the case, try reinstalling GEM and make sure it is in path where Pd can find it.
hope this helps.

Can someone please help me?
I am new to linux and to pd, but i think everithing is instaled correctrly, i used Synaptic in ubuntu linux to install pd and gem, so everything should be in the right place (right?)
Un when i start pd ( # pd -lib Gem )
i get this:
/usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: /usr/lib/pd/extra/Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: vorbis_info_clear
Gem: can't load libraryWhat am i doing wrong?
-
you are missing the vorbis libraries; file a bug report to the person who packages Gem for your distribution, requesting them to get the dependencies right

Hi,
I have a problem with the gem-0.90.0-OSX-G4-bin-doc.tar.gz. I use a OSX 10.4.3 and it seems the Gem.pd_darwin isn't working because Pd doesn't recognize Gem objects. I put the Gem.pd_darwin and the .pd file that uses Gem objs in the same directory and Pd didn't recognize these objs neither. Any suggestions?Thank you very much for your attention.
Sergio.

Hi skrako,
startup your PD, go to Preferences > Startup
enter "gem" (without the little lines) into one of the fields, save and restart your PD.Next time it loads the gem stuff.
try it -
I'm trying to use GEM on Windows XP and I'm having trouble specifying the pathway for startup
I have the following
\Program Files\pd\bin\pd -lib /Program Files/pd/gem/gem-0.90.1
I get the following response:
consistency check failed: sys_decodedialog: \{+Program+_Filespdbinpd+_-lib+_/Program+_Files/pd/gem/gem-0.90.1\}
My guess is I have some serious syntax errors. Any help?

Bonjour
Does some know how to make use pictures for instance a fish, a person or a bicycle or what so ever without the frame or the whole paper sheet
my aim is to render them as particles running over the GEMWIN just as a fish a person and not as a sphere or a cube etc
merci
Gottfried
COMPUART CLUB OF MONTMARTRE is working on 'dialog' between images on sound and from now on video installations via PURE DATA
-
what u need to do is make a rectanglular picture, so put a fish on a black background.
then use [alpha] to make the black part transparent.
btw... for unrelated posts, probably best to make a new thread. merci
-
matthew w, i think your problem relates to the difference between backslashes and forward slashes in the path

hello hardoff
many thanks

the first tries are encouraginggottfried

ok I've switched by slashed and I now I'm getting this
/Program Files/pd/bin/pd -lib /Program Files/pd/gem/gem-0.90.1/: can't load library
what exactly am I trying to point to? the .dll file or something else?
-
it seems that the problem is not "cant load Gem Library ", but "cant load Gem Help files" here ...
Gem object works well but if you right click on any gem object and choose "help", the console will show me "couldnt find pix_texture help ... " like that.
I also got this problem on my xp pc laptop ,
and I'll try on my ubuntu ...vea

HI,
I got the same problem as pnoe. I'm trying to run PD in openSuse 11.1 and after one week of work I'm not able to make GEM run..../ Gem.pd_linux: undefined symbol: _ZN6FTFont4BBoxEPKwRfS2_S2_S2_S2_S2_
Gem: can't load librarysomebody knows what's happening?
Many thanks.

same problem

Pd-extended includes GEM, as well as a number of other useful libraries. Unless you have a specific reason not to use Pd-extended, I would give it a shot.

I tried PD-extended and the problem persist.
