Im quite new to puredata and I've recently started using Automatonism. When creating a patch with Automatonism, after adding some modules pd gets stuck once activating the DSP. However, when turning them off it runs just fine...Any suggestions to tackle the problem/ solve this? thank you!

@Esse Pd getting stuck when DSP is turned on usually means that Pd is not communicating well with the sound card. Try opening the Media Tab at the top of a Pd window, and then Audio settings.
Setting the Delay (msecs) to a high value such as 80 might solve the problem.
We will have lots of questions, as your problem might be unusual..... so....

Does the Media Tab >> Test Audio and Midi.. patch work (with DSP on and without Automatonism)
Operating system?
Sound Card?
Screenshot of any error messages in the Pd console when Pd is stuck.
Anything else you think might help.
Have you followed the instructions for Automatism properly.... opening only Main.pd?.... DSP will turn on automatically when you open that patch.

*Hopefully someone with more direct knowledge of Automatonism can help, but I would hazard a guess that the Automatonism program is taking the audio device over exclisively and so when PD tries to enable DSP it can't grab the audio device.

I haven't seen this kind of problems in years though.

You could check if there is an option in Automatonism to release the audio device when it's not playing.*

Automatonism is not a program, it's a set of Pd-vanilla abstractions simulating a modular synthesizer. It does nothing to the audio device, Pd itself does whatever it is that it does.
A simple way to try to debug it is to load Pd with -noloadbang. It might be that some [loadbang] is causing some issue. Sending your patch is also helpful, because all we can do now is speculate.

Hi all, thank you for all the suggestions. I have Windows 10. I've indeed tried changing the output device / drivers but nothing changes .... I attach the patch in case it might be useful main.pd

@Esse Unfortunately your patch works fine in windows 7 on my laptop using the built-in soundcard.
It even works in Pd extended.
I have only looked at Automatonism so as to try to help Forum users, but it seems useful, and fairly simple.
Your patch does not report a high cpu usage.
I notice that once the folder is unzipped the folders and their contents are green in windows 7 which means that the files are encrypted...... so I right-clicked the folder and clicked advanced in the properties dialog and removed the encryption. Could that be relevant?

Otherwise it still seems likely that it is a soundcard issue.
What soundcard are you using for Pd?
Is it mimo or ASIO or?

If you open one of the more simple files from the Pd doc folder....
eg....... Pd/doc/3.audio.examples/A08.beating.pd
.... does that work properly without Pd crashing when you turn on DSP (it turns on DSP as you increase the "db" volume number box)?
