Hi all,

suppose we have a .wav file which contains a melody line created with a sine oscillator.
So the timbre is purely sinusoidal, very poor.
What ways are there, in Puredata, to transform that file so that the timbre becomes more interesting and complex?

More difficult question: is it possible to transform that sinusoidal .wav file by requesting the software to take the waveform from an assigned audio sample (sound of organ, choir, violin, etc)?

@atux If the source material is boring the end result is likely to also be boring regardless of how complex you make that waveform, a theremin is generally a fairly pure sine wave but in capable hands the theremin is quite expressive. You can make a sine more interesting through waveshaping/distortion, filtering and dynamics, and you can make a sine control other sounds through pitch tracking and you also have all the traditional effects like reverb, chorus, tremolo, etc. This is a huge topic and the options are limitless. Everything from the Audio Math and Audio Filters sections of the pd help can be used here as well as [sigmund~] and [bonk~] for pitch tracking/triggering fun, plus a huge amount of externals. Experiment.

having done something like this with audiomulch (i.e., rendering bog-standard softsynth stuff from logic audio platinum, then loading it into audiomulch and processing it), i don't think it is impossible to make flat sounding stuff really interesting. just run it through resonators, saturators, hard hard EQ, distortion, bunches of reverbs and granulators until it starts adding to the sound. now, you might work a bit, but once you get the "muddle it up" set up going, you can recycle it and use it in many ways. now, the effects themselves, i don't have enough of such effects set up for puredata, but i do know it is strictly feasible to do it, as long as you have really extreme effects available to you.

Just load a different source file of your liking.

changing the timbre of an existing recording with an already pitched instrument is difficult, but slightly changes are possible to an extent.

for a sinewave or theremin i would start with a waveshaper and eventually split the signal into upwards and downwards and treat the parts differently.
