Thanks first off for all of the advice!

I really should, I think, know how to do this, but cannot figure out the easy way to do it.

I want to copy a few audio files to another folder at the end of a run of a program, but cannot figure out the easy way to do this. I would assume there should be.

So, for instance:

in compositionONE folder I have:
audio1.aif
audio2.aif
audio3.aif

Can I quickly save these three files to a new folder called backupaudiofiles in the folder compositionONE?

I have tried figuring this out for a few months to no avail and just thought that it really should be easy.

I guess all this could be done easily with a shell script. Why do you want to do it in Pd?

In running my piece, I use audiofiles from previous performances in future performances. When I am testing the system, I would move the files to another folder, then place them back in the folder when I am ready to continue working on the piece.

My quick fix right now is that I write new soundfiles to another folder. It just is inelegant because at the end of a performance I have to wait for the soundfiles to be rerecorded to another folder.

Make sense?

Is there a way to do it with [shell] and send scripts such as 'mkdir' to make a directory/folder and then 'cp' them into that folder? Have you tried something like that already?

So, I did not know that you could use a shell like that. That is great. Tried using it. I can get ls to work. . . . it starts at computer "home" directory? Not my account home directory. I am trying to use cd to change directories but shell does not seem to allow me to do that.

So:

|ls (
|
|shell|

works.

However:
|cd Users(
|
|shell|

does not seem to work. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I am trying to get to the right folder to copy my files.

I was able to copy the files. This is exactly the type of thing I was looking to do. Unfortunately, I cannot get cd to work, but that does not matter. I just will put the path to the files I want to copy. Thank you!

Why do you want to "cd" to somewhere? Is it a directory with a script? If so, then all you need to do is this:

[sh /path/to/script/your_script.sh(
|
[shell]

This will execute "your_script.sh" which is in "/path/to/script". With [shell] you need to provide an absolute path. I guess "cd" works, but it looks to me that every command is some sort of a new shell, so after you "cd" to somewhere, the next thing will start from scratch, or something like this.

I just thought it would be easier to cd. However, once it seemed to me that you could not use that in pd, I just created the full path. So, it is not a big deal. I am, truth be told, not adept at UNIX nor for that matter pd.

That being said, I am copying and moving directories and files suing |shell| and have made more progress in completing my piece.

If you go into the pdwindow.tcl file inside the pd app itself you can uncomment the line

#create_tcl_entry

because there is a wish terminal in pd.
if you type

console show

into the pdwindow you can get the regular wish terminal, if you don't want to use the pdwindow.

But thats just for future reference. If you want to do it programmatically through pd, shell is the way to go. Or a gui plugin.

Can I get |shell| to work in Pd 0.47.1? Or does this only work in Extended?
