Hi everyone,

I am using ye olde readsf~ to read audio files in PD. However, I want to be able to load an audio file in readsf~ and get Pd to automatically work out the BPM of that audio file. and display the BPM value in a number box.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

This is a big project. I know that modern DAWs like ProTools and Logic accomplish it like this:

1. Analyze audio for transients
2. Use an algorhithem to determine a pattern of evenly subdivided transients
3. Measure the time between these transients and convert to BPM

So essentially you would have to find ways to implement this in pd

• phase vocoder
• onset detection (several methods)
• pitch tracking (several methods)
• beat and tempo tracking
• mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC)
• transient / steady-state separation

But maybe you want instant bpm feedback about the audio file (not tracking the bpm)... Not easy to compile & working in pd (on linux it should works)).

Thanks for the responses. I thought this would be a big project tbh. The good news is my OS is Linux so aubio seems to run sweet!

I'll let you all know how I get on and I'll post patch on here if I'm successful
