Hi all, my first post here...
I'm using pd 0.40-2 on MacOSX Tiger 10.4.9, with much fun!
But everytime i start the app, i have to set again audio/midi preferences, because pd was back to default parameters (builtin audio i/o and no midi in/out).
Yeah, this is not really a problem, but is a little annoyng...

Do you know if this happen on osx even with 0.39.2-extended-RC1? Is this version the better one? What are the core differences between the 2 versions (beyond extensions..)?

you could write a .pdrc and put
-midiindev 1
-midioutdev 1
-audioindev 1
-audiooutdev 1
(numbers depend on your system)
in it
which number it must be you can see i the preferences window
pd -help tells you what else you can put in.

i've tried out your tip, but the prob is: in pref windows (audio and midi) all devices are numbered with a (0) before!!! So they have the same number...

now i'm using the last auto-build but the prob persists...

in my pref window there are no numbers but i count them myself...downwards. 1234.

ok, it works! pd starts numbering devices from 0 to x...
