Download: node.pd

Instructions:

1. Save node.pd into Pd's path.

2. Then call it by typing node into an object box.

3. Open it. You'll see both control and audio nodes, which you can copy and paste into your main canvas.

Some observations:

Notice that it's not always easy to see whether you are making a connection correctly. For example, you may find the problem of having a node that has two cables going out of its outlet. For solving this, move the node a bit to the sides until you see if eeverything's OK. Alternatively, reconnect.

The other important thing to notice is that these nodes are just minute subpatches with an active GOP. If you open one of them, you'll find just an inlet and an outlet. This is great since from one node you can branch a lot of extra cables.

Now let me upload an alternative version, which slightly sacrifices looks for functionality. This version makes it easier to see whether you are making an audio connection correctly.

(Maybe you can make yourself an abstraction with both versions included).

@What I'm really glad that you find it useful What. It's a no-brainer. I really don't know why people haven't done this before. Or, maybe, somebody has, but for some reason it hasn't become common knowledge.

In my view, bending cables and having small nodes, helps in reducing visual clutter, in portraying ideas clearly, and in building concepts fluidly. Luckily, these things are easy to make and easy to customize.
