I've modified one of the sampler patches a little, mainly to get varispeed and get rid of the doppler effect on changing the chunk size using samphold~.

The main problem however is that samphold~ doesn't sample its input when the patch loads. I have to manually send a reset message to get the whole thing going...

what am I doing wrong? help!

Can't you use a [loadbang] to send that reset message when the patch starts up?

I've seen those sampler patches when i started working with pd. I found them rather complex to achieve something very simple. Since then i use a combination of [tabread4~] and a [line~] object. This way you can play the sample at any speed and even backwards, just by sending simple messages to the [line~] object. Is there actually any advantage in this approach over what i am doing?

Sorry i should have mention that - I did put a loadbang on the reset message. Did ne work. Thats why I posted this message and the patch originally.

I thought that myself about the vline/line vs the phasor approach. Between all the visual patching environments, each has it own method for reading a table. Bidule uses an accum and it's really quite simple. Max uses this phasor approach. PD seems to use both phasor or line~ .......So its all rather confusing!

But for sake of clarity and back to the original point, why does the [reset( not get 'banged' (sorry) by the [loadbang]?

well, i loaded your patch and got a message in the console:

print: reset

.. so it is getting banged as far as i can see.

i've always just used tabread4~ and line~ / vline~ for sampling too. not ever noticed any doppler effects.
