[textfile] sometimes gives immediately an end-of-file after opening a file for reading.
at other times the same file opens ok.

it happens with different files.

i use [openpanel] -> [read $1 cr(
and then [rewind(.

inserting a [delay 5000] before the rewind seems of no influence.

am i missing something?

Just tried with Pd-0.45-3 both with [openpanel] and [read /absolute/path/to/file.txt cr( and it worked fine for me. I sent [rewind( and then [bang( to get the file's lines one by one till the end of it, no problem.
Which Pd are you using and which OS? There might be a version and OS specific problem, but I wouldn't be aware of that...

i found the 'solution'.
my patch was like this:

[t b b b]
| | |
| | [openpanel]
| | |
| | [read $1(
| | |
| | to textfile
| |
| [rewind(
|
[bang(

however the [openpanel] does not take part in the [trigger] philosophy;
the next bang from the [trigger] does not wait for completion of that branch.

putting the [trigger] after the [openpanel] and before the [read $1( solved it.

Another solution would be to put all the commands into a single message object:

[bang(
|
[openpanel]
|
[read $1, rewind, bang(
|
[textfile]

You can put multiple messages into one object if you separate them with commas. This is how objects like [line] work. The message [1, 0 150( is actually two messages read sequentially.
