Hi, I am pretty new to Pd -- and computer music in general, I downloaded Pd 0.38.4 for windows, and whenever I try to put a 'scalar' object, the Pd window returns the error message "couldn't create." What's weird is that the scalar objects in the tutorials work just fine, do I just need to reinstall? or is there somewhere that I can download an extarnal scalar object.

no, usually reinstall is not an issue, try first to understand what is causing the error,
eventually starting PD with the Startup Flag (File->Startup->StartupFlags) -verbose, restart PD,
load your patch and have a look at the console error messages.. This may help..

When I ran into that in the past I found where the patch was in the doc folder and copied it into the extra folder. Alberto's answer is the more correct way to do it, though.
