hei PD-people,

i do have problems with the sound output in pd. i'm using ubuntu 12.04 and pd 0.43.4 .
it did cost me a lot of time installung the programm cause of ubuntu 12.04 - finally i did it, but have no output sound, when i test it with an own patch or the "Media->test audio..."-testing-patch.
when i click on media->preferences->audio settings... i cant choose neither an input nor an output device. when i start puredata in the terminal with: "pd -listdev" i get the text file in the pd-Main-window:

no audio output devices found

no midi input devices found
no midi output devices found
"

i tried enter the pd path in "media->preferences->path", so the prog searches after libraries or something for the audio devs...dunno....helped nothing

in an older pd version i set the audio preferences to ALSA and i got sound. but this choice i dont have in this version, neither works in terminal: "pd -alsa".

i do have sound in all other programs (if sb thinks its a general sound card problem..).

unfortunately i dont have any informations to my sound card. its an old acer laptop (1694WLMi). not originally mine....

i dont find any help in the internet for this case. not in this forum, too.
any help would be very nice!!

maybe your soundcard is turned off in BIOS

unfortunately there are no sound card options in my BIOS.....:(

so it shoul'd be a pd problem... maybe something went wrong during the installation process

did you try alsamixer command from terminal? maybe you can find something wrong there and usually it gives some info about the soundcard
do you have jack control installed too?

i've not installed jack_control....should i?
through alsamixer i got following information:

No, jack is not strictly necessary. Very strange indeed. Are you sure your pc is using alsa for the other audio application?
Is alsa package completely installed? Try the troubleshooting first.

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I'm experiencing the exact same thing. PD vanilla 0.49 on a fresh lubuntu 18.04 distro. Sound is working everywhere but in PD. Opening the audio devices menu, no devices are listed, and only OSS and Portaudio are listed as driver options in the media menu. Starting PD with the -alsa flag gives the following error message in the terminal: Pd compiled without ALSA-support, ignoring '-alsa' flag.

So I tried reinstalling alsa and then reinstalling PD, with the --enable-alsa flag. The configure routine spit this out at the end:
fftw: no
wish(tcl/tk): wish
audio APIs: PortAudio ALSA OSS
midi APIs: ALSA OSS

But running PD still yield the same error. And trying the -alsa flag still tells me PD is compiled without alsa support.

Help anybody?

Another bump, posting in case anyone else encounters the same problem and finds this thread (I encountered it while attempting to build pd 0.50 on UbuntuStudio and also a Raspberry Pi).

It's necessary to install the libasound2-dev package as a prerequisite in order to build pd, and the output of 'configure' will show ALSA in both the audio and midi APIs. However, there is another dependency as well; the libavdevice-dev package is also required for the pd executable to support ALSA.

If you've already tried to build pd without this package present, it may be necessary to run:
make clean
./configure
make
This should give a pd executable with working ALSA support.

I had the exact same issue so I tried the method proposed by cearnsh and it worked perfectly for me ! So thank you cearnsh !!
Since I was working under a Fedora distrib, i had to install the library libavdevice-free-devel and remove ffmpeg, ffmpeg-lib and libavdevice libraries since there was a conflict between them.

Thanks a lot
