alright, im a bit of a gnube, so i really have little idea of what im doing when it comes to getting linux systems to work right. what i do know is that all i need is a basic distro with a very simple gui, a very simple web browser, jack, and pd extended. so far ive tried ubuntu, lubuntu, a minimal debian install with xfde, and pure dyne. pure:dyne came with pd and a bunch of externals, but not pd extended; lubuntu and ubuntu installed pd extended just fine, except that it wont load (and ubuntu is a bit heavy for my labptop, anyway); debian wasnt able to install it on a count of some missing or outdated dependencies (libmp3lame0, or something).

is it possible? can i make it work? would someone like to walk me through it like im a small child?

ill even try slackware if itll work.

You should be able to get it to work on practically any 'distro' you would like..

Compile it yourself!

This way, you will only need to install the dependencies for the objects that are important to you .. some objects are very specialised, and hence need specialised libraries.
The downside is that you need to install a few 'dev packages' .. but you can uninstall them once the compile is finished .. if you wish

maybe Lubuntu works for you?

unfortunately, no i couldnt get lubuntu to install pdextended correctly.

is compiling terribly difficult? i know very little code (apt-get install, or sudo apt-get install, thats about it), but ive gotten fl studio to work on ubuntu with a walkthrough. would compiling jack and pd be that much more difficult?

is this a good guide, ie its the same steps for pd extended?

Tell us more about why you can't get 'extended' to work on lubuntu .. you say it won't load .. what exactly happens?
Open a linux console/xterm, and type pd-extended and 'hit' return
ie. run it from the 'command line'

.. what error messages do you see?
Segmentation fault perhaps? Or what?

well since then, ive uploaded debian, and decided i wanted to try lubuntu again. im gonna install 11.10.

How's about 0.42.5?

well, ive given up atm on extended, and just went with regular old pd. so far, so good.

well ok, im not satisfied. i really want to get pdextended to work under lubuntu.

so ive installed lubuntu 11.10, installed jackd, and downloaded pdextended 0.42.5 for ubuntu maverick.

but when i open it with the debi package installer, it gives me the error:

"dependency is not satisfiable: libquicktime1 (>=2:1.1.1+debian)"

upon further digging, i think libquicktime1 is no longer available.

what can i do to bypass this dependency and install the others, along with pdextended?

Don't know about lubuntu, but I've installed debian squeeze a couple of times and the only dependency for Pd-extended not satisfied after the standard debian install is libmp3lame0. To install this is quite a ritual. First, non-free repositories must be enabled (can do this in Synaptic settings). Then 'debian-multimedia-keyring' must be installed. Then libmp3lame0. After that, Pd-extended can be installed. If Pd-extended won't load from the menu or desktop icon, it is because of the call to command 'pasuspender' which has to be deleted from the startup script if PulseAudio is not installed. (Better not install PulseAudio if you use the system for music production rather than music consumption).

thank you, katjav (i am a big fan of your work, btw). i may try debian again in the future. it certainly appeals to me, as does learning slackware.

i finally managed to get pd extended with lubuntu, after a lot of run-around finding packages that each had their own dependencies.

needless to say, im pretty eager to get back to work on my projects.

katja, if you read this, can you possibly tell me how you were able to install libmp3lame0? it is telling me that i need multi-arch support to install it, but i chose the one with i386.deb, which is what i assume debian uses, correct?

I did not have that multi-arch message you mention. I installed things via Synaptic. First I installed multimedia keyring via Synaptic, then added debian-multimedia.org to the repositories in Synaptic's settings. Then install libmp3lame0 via Synaptic. Everytime you change something about the repositories in Synaptic, you need to click "reload" to make the new packages visible.

Pd-extended is not available for Debian via Synaptic, so I installed that .deb via gdebi package installer. I am on Debian Squeeze. Oh, another thing is that I needed a realtime kernel to make my audio over usb work properly.

ive installed everything, and pdextended will not start from the menu, so i tried

update-rc.d -f pasuspender remove

and pd extended still will not open. was this the correct command for squeeze? how else can i disable or delete pasuspender?

and is there a way to open pdextended from the terminal?
