I had the arduino-test patch running with firmata on the board - vereything worked out fine.

Then something happened to my arduino board and now everytime I start Pd-extended (actual version on mac os x 10.7) it crashes on startup.

Strategies to solve which did not help:

1. opening the files with older pd version, deleting everything so they are empty and then open them up with pd-extended again; the files are empty - pd-extended still crashes

2. searching for some pd-lock file which I did not find (wanted to remove it)

3. remove the corrupt files entirely from the list so pd-extended can't find them when it tries to open them

4. open a well-known working other pd-file and open it with the "open with pd-extended" function in the contextual menu of the mouse - still pd-extended wants to open the corrupted other files - and, guess what, crashes.

5. do a clean install of pd-extended - same behaviour as above...

none of this 5 strategies hat any effect besides eating my time

Why does pd-extended want to open the corrupt files?
How to stop pd-extended to open corrupt files?
How to start pd-extended with "do not open anything - just start up naked"?

I made a GUI plugin to delete and disable the Lion saved states. Copy-n-paste this code and save it to a file called ~/Library/Pd/lion-saved-state-crash-fix-plugin.tcl

I was thinking that there might be some incompatibility issue with the new xcode tolls update i made to lion, I don't know what else might be the problem

The beta release should work much better on Lion and newer:

unfortunately this version crashes as well at start up.
Maybe it has to do with some system files, I can't find any other reason.
Did you checked the crash report?
Maybe there's assigned the problem.

I also did a reboot in between as suggested by a windows user - and wow: this Windoze-like strategy somehow automagically worked out

I'm at the end of my tether here... I've done literally EVERYTHING suggested on multiple websites, I've deleted preference and saved application state data from the user library, deleted preferences from the volume library, saved hans' GUI plugin, deleted Pd-extended and installed the beta, restarted my mac, and it still won't work. PLEASE HELP!

Have you tried posting to the pd-list?

I just posted. I think I'm having the same problem like Jamestocher. This is frustrating, as I just started getting the hang of this.

and understanding libraries a little more fixed this problem for me.

EDIT: In that regard, what meant "understanding libraries"? i tried any of the afore mentioned methods, read through all the tricks in various threads and still couldn't make PD-extended 0.43.4 to stop crashing on startup.

WATCH THAT HOSTS FILE!
And make sure it is in the right location: /private/etc/hosts

My system log on ox 10.7.5 read upon first startup
"defaults: The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/../org.puredata.pdextended.default, verbose) does not exist"

after that and when attempting to start PD again
"com.apple.launchd.peruser.501: ([0x0-0x3d03d].org.puredata.pd.wish[2277]) Exited with code: 3"

The Terminal command "/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Contents/Resources/bin/pd -stderr" got me "WARNING: connect to pd failed, retrying port localhost:5402."
until i quit the process. in the meantime PDs icon in the dock flashes. Port number varies, starting from 5400.

Here i finally guessed, that my hosts file, which had the correct entries, was not in the right position. But at least i also found out, that Lion requires it's own structure within the hosts file: If you customize it, then put your own entries BEFORE the the standard 127.0.0.1 block.
