I'd really appreciate any pointers towards a Pd patch that plays wav/aiff files triggered by an external MIDI device on a Note value.

for example: using a drum machine with MIDI triggering a Note value (say C3) that will launch an audio clip (which has already been tempo synced)

the patch would only to have 16 assignable midi channels

hi, you could use arrays and [tabplay~] to play files and [notein] and [sel 54 55 56 57 etc...] with bangs that trigger [tabplay~] for the midi part.

cheers! I'm a novice at Pd, but is this easy to achieve?, already done a few tutorials concerning [notein], need a few hints on the audio player aspect which will be no longer than 8bar duration.

this is just an example of a stereo loop player...is't an abstraction so you can create many copies of that.
here i use a tabread4~ but you can achieve the same result with tabplay~ so
take a look at the sfplay help file as well.
