Looking for a basic abstraction - just don't know what it's called

I am searching for an abstraction to help me do the following:

Allow a performer to record a short sample, and then play it back for manipulation, or layer on more short samples.

I'm pretty sure this is a basic PD thing, I'm just not sure what to call the patch.

Hi,

you can try this. You can record loops synched with a metro on the fly, once recorded it will loop. In this example you have four looper but you can easily add more using the abstraction.
