Windows 7, pd extended, Live 8

I know there have been other posts on this, but I could not find a solution anywhere...

I am trying to use Jack to route multiple outputs (8) from pd to Ableton Live. I believe I have Jack installed correctly, and can route audio in both directions between Ableton and my external sound card via Jack "cables."

I am unable to get pd to show up in the Jack patch panel. I have chosen "ASIO (via portaudio)" from the pd media menu, then selected "(1)JackRouter" as my output device in audio settings, turned audio on, etc. but still pd does not show up in Jack.

I am hopeful someone can provide clear instructions for using Jack with pd on Windows.

I'm having the exact same problem (pd-extended, Live 8, Windows 7). Ableton seems to be communicating with Jack but Pd does not.

Unfortunately, it seems like a common problem for win/pd/jack users. I couldn't find the solution for it.
But, I had some success in using pd as vst synth/plugin in Nuendo. I believe it's not harder to make it work in your environment. More on this here: http://crca.ucsd.edu/~jsarlo/pdvst/

The only downside (from my experience) of such setup is that you actually lose pd-extended features, I think it is some kind of pd-Vanilla. That means that you will spend some time installing the externals etc.

Even latency is much lower in pdvst. I'm on winxp + rme HDSP 9652 audio interface.

I hope you'll find a way to solve your problem...

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by 8 outputs, and, I don't use Ableton.

But, when I ran up against this Win-PD-wall with Jack, I just shifted over to LoopBe (http://nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html)

Thanks ShankarBaba. I believe LoopBe creates virtual midi cables between applications. I use MidiYoke to do the same thing. What I need is to create virtual cables for transporting audio between applications. That's what virtual Audio Cable and Jack are supposed to do. But I cannot get either to work - Jack not at all with pd, and Virtual Audio Cable not for more than two stereo cables, carrying a total of four channels of audio. I am trying to get something working with 8 channels of audio in total.

On Jack forum, they recommend to try:

Beta versions:

Pure 32 bits version: http://www.grame.fr/~letz/Jack_v1.9.8_32_setup.exe

Mixed 64/32 bits version: http://www.grame.fr/~letz/Jack_v1.9.8_64_setup.exe

But they don't work yet with Pd.

with Virtual Audio Cable make sure you install it as an advanced user
and make sure you rest your pc so the 4 divers show up

I think it's a problem of 0.42.5. I run it on Xp, and Pd doesn't show up in Jack, but when I try Vanilla or any former version of Pd as well as 0.43.1, it can be connected in Jack

EDIT: Maybe not "any" former Pd, but 0.41.4 worked, didn't try more

Uaaauuu.. I can't believe!!! Vanilla works... I download 0.43 version and it appears on jack connection kit on windows 7.

Now I only need to know the differences between the extended and vanilla versions and how to rectify it for my use!!! This will be another search!

When I was testing JACK with windows, only vanilla PD worked with it - PD-extended does not.

I had some limited joy here, too. My goal is to pipe audio between multiple instances of PD. Or to another app and back. Latency may kill this 'pipe dream' (groan) but I'll give it a shot anyway. Maybe I can use the latency creatively!

So...

I installed the latest nightly auto-build of 0.43.1 extended.

I started Jack, ran an instance of PD, selected ASIO then Jack as output. (For the first time) I could see PD from qjackctl.

It all seemed to fall to bits, though, upon starting a second instance of PD and attempting to select Jack as its input. PD2 didn't show in Jack and it lost the list of ASIO drivers from it's drop-down.

atarikai, try extended 0.41.4, it should work

Ok.... Here the extended 0.43.1 is working...!! I'm using M-audio fast track pro asio driver.

If I remember well, pd-extended 0.43.4 don't have jack support in windows. I have a wild build with jack support, you can try.

It was tested in Windows 7 x64 Home Edition with jack 1.9.9 mixed version (http://jackaudio.org/download)

I had problems running this build in administrator mode, therefore don't run this build in administrator mode. If you have some distortion in audio, try to assing "use callbacks" option in Audio Settings.
