the screen of gem is flickering and unstable in my crisp ubuntu install.

i have attached a screenshot of how the black screen of gem looks.
i am trying to make the video mixer from here:

but it fails to both loop the video (a white square replaces both clips after a short period, maybe after they played through where the loop should kick in)

i tried this in 2008 as well which led to dropping pd after all. but this time i wont give up.
so please help get gem working.
i am trying to make some vj stuff for a underground festival so i am looking forward to get the problem fixed.

What do you exactly mean by "flikering and unstable"?

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll post this here.
It would appear that on pd-extended for Debian Squeeze as well as Ubuntu Lucid, Gem won't loop videos. After playing once, a white square appears, just like the OP mentioned.

It doesn't really matter what type of video- mjpeg avi or mov, mp1, 2 or 4, dv, big, small, whatever, nothing will loop. The weird thing is that it used to work on the same hardware on older versions of the OSses.

Here's the patch. It's the bog standard pix_film patch.

The vj-mixer won't work at all, by the way. It dies the moment the fader is moved.

you can loop videos manualy with pix_film.
if you load a video, it will output its length in frames, you can use this value in [mod] and play with a metro.

I didn't notice the attached patch until now. Much more compact and elegant than the metro solution I tried (although that may have the benefit of messing with frame rates). It works deliciously. Thanks!
