Hey forum!

My first post, and I'm glad I found this forum.

I really want to start using PD - been having a copy of it on my computer for 3 years, but I never do start, because I can't do tildes on my Powerbook in PD. I can do it in any other program ~ see, but not in PD and I can't copy+paste it from here to there.

I've searched every key, with every function key, so I hope there is one combination that I've overlooked, and one of you guys know it.

if i remember right, a friend of mine used "alt+n" for ~ on his mac, but i'm not 100% sure about that. cannot test it, am not on mac...

It is a PowerBook from 2005, so I don't know if it has the same keyboard layout as other laptop macs.

press 'alt + n' release the buttons, then press spacebar.

is there a tilde in the upper left corner of your keyboard, right under the esc key?

i hit 'N' twice while holding down 'alt'. it's faster than using spacebar, i'd say.
where do u live, which countries keyboard layout do you use?
did you try the button under esc key anyway (°^)?

I have the Danish layout. The key under esc doesn't do it, neither 'n' twice fast..... stupid Danish layout...

alright, try holding down 'alt' and press the button with '*+' on it twice. (not sure, about the print u got on it, i mean the button next to backspace and enter)

I've checked alt with every key thats not a function or command key, and it doesn't work....

damn, i tested this on a newer macbook set to danish layout and it worked.
well, sorry then, if u can't find a solution on the web, u'll have to take your macbook to the next apple-store and let them search the key. might be funny though.

I have Czech keyboard on my MacBook Pro and finally i found how to make it!!!
(no problem on Czech keyboard but i prefer U.S. for faster object insertion)
Try "Shift" and "\" (Left Shift + that key next to it on U.S. keyboard mode)
I hope this should work on your mac, i have my mac only short time and i've found the Keyboard Viewer as very usefull...

I'm running pure data on a macbook and I need "alt+n+space" to get a tilde...a bit complicated.
Is there a way to assign only ONE (useless) touch of my keyboard to the tilde???

This topic is a total joke.
There is a keyboard viewer and a character viewer in OS X. the character viewer displays all characters in the world where you can copy/paste them into your current document and the keyboard viewer shows where on your (local) keyboard that character is in any font. You can display both apps in the menu bar if only you activate (click) to do so in the keyboard control panel.
Seriously, if you don't know how to use your computer, how will you be able to do anything with it?

sorry, I apologize for my harsh words. It is indeed more tricky than I thought if the keyboard hasn't a tilde key. Pd doesn't accept copy/paste characters or actually replaces them with something different. I just noticed that inserting a ~ results in a < in Pd.
That is really very awful... Sorry folks. The only work around I can think of is loading a patch which has an object with the ~ and copy/paste the character out of the object, I tried it, it works.
