We're trying to work with PD for a students project. Sadly, a couple of us (all Mac users) are encountering random freezes on all versions of PD. Especially when trying to change the output setting in the preferences, PD completely stops working. There's no way to hit OK, Apply or anything. Also, PD won't let itself close.

Is there anyone that has the same problem and has a solution for it? I myself am working on Ventura already.

@GypsyBonsai You probably mean the audio settings. If Pd cannot hook to the soundcard driver properly (incorrect settings) then it will freeze.
The delay (msecs) value can be increased to create a larger buffer which can help.
Once you have "bad" settings saved it can freeze Pd when it opens and then you cannot change the settings and recover.
If so then try opening Pd using this patch..... fix.pd
It will reset the audio settings to 2ch in, 2ch out, 44100 and a delay setting of 80....... which is usually a big enough buffer to get the soundcard talking again.
Modify that in a text editor before opening if 80 is still not enough.

Otherwise maybe Mac OS has restricted permissions for apps to join the audio group or connect to the pins.... and those will need to be adjusted.

Sadly, it didn't fix our problem. The settings got reset, Delay and everything, but it still freezes up on different occasion. Whenever we want to change something in the Preferences, it freezes.

When we get it to work (mostly after a restart), sometimes it even freezes when PD is running and it can't go back into Editor Mode.

I gave PD Full Disk Access. Is there any other security permission I have to give it?

@GypsyBonsai Could be the Mac OS notarization or Tk/tcl revision.
There have been build problems for M1 (arm64) and some issues with Intel x86 and later OSX versions.... https://github.com/pure-data/pure-data/issues/1251 and the end of that thread suggests that they are solved in Pd 0.52-2
Your students might well need different flavours depending on their architecture...... http://puredata.info/downloads/pure-data/releases/0.53-0 .... and external libraries might be a mess for a while.
