I'm very new at this so please excuse my ignorance!

All I want to know how to do is either slow down or speed up a video source in Gem?

I am in the middle of building an interactive installation that I hope to be controlled by an Arduino. But before I get into the nitty gritty of programming the board, I need to get the basics sorted.

I have managed to bulid a Gem window, and play back footage successfully, I now just need your help to tell me how I can adjust the speed of the video.

I've attached the patch I'm currently using.

Any help would be great!!

Don't use 'auto $1.' make an integer counter, bang it with a metro, and send that output to the right inlet of [pix_film]. Counters usually look like this;

[X]

[metro 20]
|
[int 0]X[+ 1] (outlet of [+ 1] into right inlet of int)
|
[mod n] (replace n with however many frames you want to loop)

The only thing now is how do I get pure data to play back the audio of my video file? how do I get the sound of the video as well?

I know its probably really simple, but I can't work it out?

GEM only plays audio in 'auto 1' mode. you could strip the audio out with a video editing program and play it back with tabread4~. This way, you could sync it with the video and it would be pitch shifted and stretched appropriately.

What is auto 1 mode? could you show me where and how tabread4~ fits in with the patch I'm currently trying to modify?

I've attached the patch, If you could make any modifications so that it would play back extracted audio that would be absolutely great!

I've been searching all day and night trying to find a patch that plays back audio and video in Gem but with no success...

Any help would be great!! I'm going mad trying to solve something that I know is so simple to you guys, so I'm sorry for the lack of understanding on my behalf..!

You may have to play the audio portion of the video seperately. I would extract it to an aiff with Quicktime Pro, or something like it. Then you can play it back with tabread4~. Of course, you;ll need to do some math to figure out at what speed to play the audio in order to match the video.

I gave this a try. But I can't seem to figure out how to make it control the speed of a video. I can only get it to loop the beginning of the video.

the speed is done with the metro.

the second outlet of pix_film outputs the number of frames a video has.
or more precise:
it outputs three floats packed. [unpack 0 0 0] to get framecount, width and height.

therefore connecting the framecount outlet to the right inlet of [mod] sets the countlength to the exact length of the video.

the first inlet of [int] should receive a [0( message that is also connected to the second outlet of pix_film to reset the counter when a new video is being loaded.
