vst~ is an external for windows only, ported by Thomas Grill (link is here:
http://www.parasitaere-kapazitaeten.net/ext/ )

In the atteched patch: open vst-param, try to load your plugin and
get some info from there...

PS: I had few problems in the past with loading the external vst~.dll, so look at the
PD console if it works

sorry I don't get this... I've got the vst~ object opening fine in pd but I cannot for the life of me work out what i have to do to get it to link to/ open a vst plugin. Please help... I'm on windows 7 64-bit by the way.

You can download the help file here, put it in the same folder of the .dll and then tou can open the help file for the object and you should figure it out https://svn.grrrr.org/ext/trunk/vst/pd/vst~-help.pd
