What's the current status of Gem's particle system?

Most of the help patches are incomplete.

[part_color]'s help patch looks like it should have all of the pieces, but when I run it, I see nothing.

I also searched for other tutorials or demos. There are a couple on YouTube, from 2012 -- e.g.

Any other resources?
