Hey Guys

Recently started patching and just playing around with it, but pd keeps at 100% with my cpu usage after launching and no matter what i do in the audio settings it doesn't seems to go down, any ideas?

Runing macbook 15 inches from 2012 with macOS 10.12 sierra no problem with ableton for over 50 tracks and running core audio with an apogee duet.

@niqucaiba8 I am not very familiar with osx. But the activity monitor might not be reporting actual cpu usage...... http://www.brendangregg.com/blog/2017-05-09/cpu-utilization-is-wrong.html ... because the instance of Pd might be stalled.
And that might be because you have 2 other instances of Pd in the activity list that you have opened more recently. They are probably all talking to the same instance of "wish"....... the tcl/tk program that does all the graphical GUI work for Pd.
Pd and wish communicate through local ports, and the oldest instance of Pd could be stalled waiting for data that it will never receive.
All just "maybe".... sorry. I could easily be wrong about this.
You could try "force" shutting down all instances, and starting again.
Somebody else might reply, (maybe @LiamG), if they know why this has happened..... and especially if they know how to stop it happening again in the future.

@whale-av Thanks for the reply, i read the article you send over, i've tried force quite the 100% pd and my cpu fan stops work like crazy and if i do anything in pd it shuts down as well.

I'm not sure if it's because any software that i've installed maybe causing this. I have the same issue with Max/MSP running just over 15 modules with BEAP and my CPU fan starts working like crazy.

Don't think I can offer much help unfortunately--I don't know anything about Macs. Does this happen with any patch, or only some patches? Ie. does it max out if you're only running the "test audio and MIDI" patch?

Is this the latest version of Pd Vanilla (48)?

Whale-av may be on to something with the multiple instance problem. I've seen some posts on the pd list relating to instructors having a preference against Vanilla in the classroom because students unfamiliar with it kept running into multiple launch problems. I don't think the PurrData variant allows this to happen

Don't know for sure. I have to fire up the mac and start testing again soon.

Are you loading up any patches when it starts or are you starting it without any patches loaded? If it is a patch that is causing the problem, you could try starting with the -noloadbang flag. Also try starting it with -noaudio flag to see if it is indeed the dsp that is causing the issue. Also, check to see if other apps are causing similar behavior. I have worked on a few MBP models from 2012 recently, and it would seem that planned obsolescence is right on schedule, as there was a wave of 2011 and 2012 models having their GPUs spike performance and overheat late last year. Thats a long shot, but hell if I havent seen it with my own two eyes...

If that is relevant, try taking measures to ensure that your laptop stays cool and well ventilated. Even when the GPU isn't failing, overheating of the GPU causing those sorts of behavior is fairly common in MBPs from my experience.
