How do you send a value to the Xth inlet on the Y clone?

In other words:

I have an abstraction that has 3 inlets;
and created 5 clones of them (using [clone]);
and I want to send a value to the third clone on it's second inlet.

How do I do that?

The easiest way might be to use [send]/[receive] pairs, where the [r ] name will depend on the instance index.
If you create a [r input$1] this will listen to [s input0]. You can also set dynamic names to [s ], so you don't need to use lots of those, only one per inlet for all instances.

Or you can connect a message box to the second inlet and type in "set 3, this (whatever message you want to send)". Haven't tested it just now, but pretty sure that's right.

Is there a way to dynamically tell the [clone] object how many clones it should create? I.e. via an event, inlet, msg, bang, etc etc.

This question came up on the list recently. There is currently no way to dynamically change the number of instances after [clone] has been created. The feature was requested, but frankly I doubt we'll ever see it, since it would definitely create audio glitches.

As a hack, you could do it via dynamic patching, although this somewhat defeats the purpose, since you can also do everything that clone does via dynamic patching.

You can also just use a [switch~] in your abstraction and activate/deactivate according to the number of instances you want. So, create the maximum number initially and then control the [switch~] of the ones you don't want to use.
