Is anyone out there running pd-l2ork on AVL2016? It installed easily on my Mint partition, by way of the 16.04 PPA but I do most of my work in AVL... kinda hesitant to add repos, and there are long lists of unsatisfied dependencies when I try to compile. Makes me nervous.

Has anyone had any success with this? Has anyone tried the ubuntu PPAs with AVL?

Well, first of all AVL has always been a jack1 based system. Ubuntu jumped on the jack2 bandwagon some time ago and although Pd vanilla will work with either version of jack the Ubuntu L2ork packages have extensions with j2 dependencies. So the options there are to either replace the j1 with the j2 module in AVL (but then it won't quite be AVL as it's designer intended) or to remove the j2 dependent extensions in the L2ork source before compiling. The L2ork list would have more info in that direction.

However, you may have additional issues with AVL2016. So far I've only tried to compile Pd vanilla on AVL2016 and I've had problems with some of the GUI elements not rendering properly as well as issues with loading and adjusting the proper system font settings. Not sure what's up with that yet.

@NoDSP That is VERY insightful. THANK YOU. I had totally not put that together about jack1. I was actually more worried about the pulse dependencies! Perhaps I'll try vanilla, which probably does 90% of what I need. I'm merely "attached" to extended.

I'm only starting to deal with AVL2016 myself -- it's a completely new platform for Glen & the gang and there are still a few issues they have to work out with it before it will be up to par with previous releases. This is why I still haven't deleted my "Diehard" install (still good for audio/midi).

I can say that with "Diehard" and the other previous Debian Squash AVLs Vanilla always compiled, installed and worked without a hitch. I never installed L2ork in AVL (I have a Ubuntu/KX Studio partition for that and I'm mostly into Vanilla anyway) but others on this forum had no trouble with it after replacing the jack module. Neither Pd version was affected by the absence of Pulse Audio.

As I see it, the options for AVL2016 and Pd are this right now:

--Vanilla: Now includes the deken extension finder as standard, so adding all the libraries you need from Extended is much easier. Problem so far: I tried both compilers in 2016 and still get failed graphics renderings (i.e. gui bangs show up as blank boxes etc). Automatic loading of the system font does not work and I can't fix the issue with any of the font startup flags. This causes tightly-spaced patches to get messed up. There is another Sid-based multimedia distro -- i/o linux -- that has the latest Vanilla release in the repos. On i/o linux the graphical errors are not present, but the font issues are the same. I have not yet tried installing that repo package to see if gives the same result on AVL 2016.

--L2ork: Options as described in my last post OR you could also try the new PurrData version that is replacing it soon. It's not quite ready yet, but close. It is possible that the graphics issues are related to the outdated GUI and since the point of PurrData is to replace this, it may be a way to get past those issues. There's posts on here with links to the RC4 PurrData test release, thou you may have to compile it as I don't see any pre-compiled versions for Sid.. There is still the issue of the jack dependencies.

Let me know how you make out as we are in the same boat at the moment.

I still have diehard on my old laptop, but I just finally stepped into modernity with a 64 bit system. I may have compromised my performance on the diehard system with sloppy compiling... Extended was running smoothly, and I suspect most of my troubles with it were actually jack problems, which I found tolerable, but not ideal.

I one hundred percent agree with your assessment of AVL2016, and I say that with complete faith in Gmaq and fam. LTS leaves something to be desired, but it is good to be forced to "live for today." haha!

I don't know where to post this, so I'll put it here. The problem with installing in Ubuntu is that the installer for deb files doesn't work properly. This is for 16.4 on, and Ub Studio which I use. Using the terminal doesn't work either. Neither does Synaptic Package Manager. You have to use GDebi Package Installer. that's all. It all works then!!!!

AV Linux is a totally separate Debian based distribution that has nothing to do with Ubunttu -- on purpose.

This thread is already rather dated: AV linux has a new 2017 version (there was also some word they going to move to J2).

They sure did move to J2! Just installed AVL2017, and "burrito supreme" installed effortlessly, after enabling Debian sid repos. However, l2ork is crashing and misbehaving. Found this old thread while poking around trying to fix that. So far everything else is smooth. I have 2k16 and 2k17 side by side right now on the same HP lappy, and 17 def performs better, and I even get significantly more time out of my old battery. Surprising!
