I make psychedelic audioadventures, guiding multiple, synchronized people with headphones into wonderlandish stories. Sometimes leading them to crazy places that I acoustically augment with soundtracks and binaural stereorecordings from the exact places where people walk bye to create pré- and déjà-vu-ish time-flashs (iE you hear the door infront of you and the white, invisible rabbit tells you that you are too late - so you open the door, hear/feel the exact sound again...and again…). Using synchronized instructions I puppeteer multiple participants into interactions.
I used to manually synch multiple mp3-players but also worked with free gps-audioguide software. Also I have a little yet not perfect web-app-flasmobgenerator to synchronize up to an infinite amount of players with individual audio streams.

One of my biggest inspirations was the RjDj-app that was released at the beginning of the iTimes but sadly shortly after taken from the app store - and now after all this years I finally discovered the Mobmuplat and PdParty-apps and the possibility to not only play the old RjDj-scenes but also to modify them …so I decided to learn some PD! ..which is really not easy at the very beginning, but it literally opens worlds and my brain is working hard to understand all this amazing scenes and different patches out there…

First I really want to thank you from my heart for all this amazing and inspiring works - especially for sharing it! This makes me so very happy and I feel this is really the way it should be (well, a little easier maybe)!

2nd I want to apologize for my questions - i feel still so stupid PD-wise…but:

I am trying to learn how to port a PD-patch to MobMuPlat or PdParty.

Mainly I try to trigger recordings, playbacks and live-effects by a clock.

Today I managed to write a patch that records two samples (A and and to plays them back later in a different order (BA).
I found a way to let the sec counter trigger a bang to the recordings/playbacks but I still don´t know how I could add the minutes into that trigger (iE record at 3m14s for 10s)?
In one of the tutorials I´ve heard that there are different ways to record sound: one to memory and one to disk and that a disk recording might stop audio playbacks?

How could I timetrigger live-effects - iE at 4m33s the reverb for the mic-in slowly gets bigger for 1min and then fades back to normal // or the same with a delay // or with a voicepitch rising or falling // or with the volume of the unfiltered live-monitoring (adc~ -> day~) or the volume of the audiofile that plays back simultaneously ->

Is there any way to play back an mp3/or Ogg-file with PdParty or MobMuPlat? I found some unofficial patches that seem to be able to let PD stream shoutcast/or icecast mp3-streams and also sth related to ogg(unofficial), but I don´t really understand if it is possible - and HOW? And on MubMuPlat/PdParty?? It´s just that I can´t put an 1hr wav-file onto peoples iThing.

I found a LANdini tutorial patch and an Ableton-link-patch and now I am wondering if i could somehow synch multiple phones at the same time to play back different audio files at each device while applying 1. /2. and 3. …and if it is maybe even somehow possible to do that via web?!

I am a bit confused about using PD-extended or unofficial or 0.47xyz(vanilla?) …Which one is better to use for the MobMuplat/PdParty development? PdParty seems to name several objects differently, which doesn’t´t allow me to run/test the scenes on my Mac - is there any editor or sth like->

I found an old app from the RjDj development: RJC-1000, but I can´t make it work. Anyone managed to use this app? It seems so much easier then MobMuPlat-editor(+PDwrapper) to connect the patches with a user interface. Did anyone managed to create a working MobMuPlat-interface? I couldn’t´t find any tutorials on that. Would be so great to understand that part.

I also found several scenes and patches that make use of the GPS-data and I would love to learn more about that and understand those patches to use GPS as triggers for my Audiotours. Is there anyone who could help me or maybe even make a tutorial on that?

Last but not least: when switching between apps (macSierra) with cmd+tab to PD (extended and 0.47, too) I have to do it everytime twice …drives me really mad - anyone has the same problem or any idea how to solve this ?!

Is there anyone in Berlin who I could meet to learn sth?

@pooopsi Hello. I don't know about MobMuplat, and so I cannot answer for extended or vanilla either.
Here is your patch with fairly simple ways of doing "1" and "2" which might help......

@pooopsi the trick is that some of the things you ask will require some externals. For ogg and ableton_link you can find them with deken external manager in pd-vanilla, it will get you setup for prototyping. (btw link won't be in extended anyway). But when you will need to run those externals you'll need to compile those for ios or android, as you pdparty is working with libpd that only supports vanilla objects (same for mobmuplat).

When it comes to externals it depends on the project :

• pdparty supports ggee: [getdir], [stripdir] and mrpeach: [midifile] so no (ogg or link support).
• for mobmuplat I couldn't find the info.

I don't really know any of those projects (I used the pd-party for android and uncontinued rjdj) and built my own to share a midiclock over wifi : ppp.mgsx.net (android only though, but we will probably include link sooner or later).

pd-party on ios looks neat and it seems that it supports a bunch of events, like accelermeter and gps you should checkout the doc and the composer pack : http://danomatika.com/code/pdparty/guide

So to sum up : GPS : ok / OGG : no atm / LINK : no atm
You could try to contact the developpers to see if they are likely to include the externs you'll want.

If you want to synch phones in a pure-vanilla style you could try using sync-jams with any of the two :

@whale-av BAM - thank you sooo much ...it took me a while to understand and set everything but therefor I really learned a lot!
The timer really work well and are easy to set now - only I have to close the patch and reopen it every time i want to reset the clock to run another test - how can I reset the blue counter .message-boxes easily?
The fader also works great but if i connect the slider output (0-1000 in 5sec) to the delay it makes a horrible sound - I guess I have to take a V or HRadio instead of a slider to let the delay jumptimes jump up step by step?

@Berenger: .not sure if i understand that right: I can install an external to PD-Vanilla (in example - an ogg-sth-external that lets me play/modulate ogg files - but not in PdParty because I have to compile this first... -> does that mean there is no way to play ogg files in PdParty or does that mean if i upload a scene I have to include the external as a subpatch inside the patch-folder?

I just found an abstraction that seems to be supported by PdParty called [rj_time] ...so I guess I could build sth like an alarm-clock and start the whole scene in synch with other devices! Very Bäm

To reset your timer I found that just pressing your "stop" button and then "start" the timer runs again from "0". I will be surprised if that does not work for you as well
For the delays you should follow the fader with an [int] (the actual fader is unnecessary though, it was just to show you what is happening) so that only whole numbers are sent, and probably not change the values too quickly...... a slow change in delay time...... or as you suggest send just occasional changes............ or you could do this........

which will only output in jumps of "10".
Put 100 in each of the [/ 10] and [* 10] objects and then each jump will be 100 (1/10th of a second).......... etc.

@whale-av :No, unfortunatley stopp & start will not reset the timer - instead it will always add +1 to the minutes ( on off 2nd time=2min) - ?! Even if I manually reset the blue-minute-counter it will jump +1 one each time (like a counter of the times I pressed the on/off toggle).

Somehow the changing of the delay still doesn´t sound well, so I went back to trigger different states (like 200/400/1000) with the "timer_set" which works well.

I finally managed to time-control the volume and also the "depth" of the delay...but I am pretty sure there is a better way:

@pooopsi this solves your counter problem........ and yes....... looking at the old one I cannot see why it worked before on my system!
This just bangs zeros into the counters before restarting.......

@pooopsi yes you are right : currently you can not play ogg you have to stick to wav files. I'm not sure you can compile the external and drop it in the folder though. the best way would be to ask dan if it's possible.
You could probably reach him through the pd-list, or via the issue system on the github repo of the project.

1. Recording to RAM has an upper limit on how large of a buffer you can allocate (I don't recall what the limit is), whereas recording to disk is contrainted only by available disk space. Recording to disk should not interrupt audio unless you are simultaneously reading/writing a lot to/from disk (or otherwise overworking the audio thread).

2. Not really. At the moment, PdParty has, in addition to pd vanilla, the externals at https://github.com/danomatika/PdParty. MobMuPlat only has the built-in vanilla externals (fiddle~, etc). There's no way to "drop in" new external objects (because iOS does not allow dynamic loading).

3. LANdini, Ping & Connect, (and, to my knowledge, Abelton link), and merely sending out a ping to other devices over multicast, all require a local network, meaning you'd have to carry around a router and have people connect to that. Otherwise, if over cell data (3G, etc), you'd have to program (in native app code) some sort of shared time (e.g. using NTP, network time protocol, which in my experience works well and will give you sub-second precision across multiple devices set to go off at the same time)

4. Pd vanilla only for both PdParty and MobMuPlat

5. There's a working example on www.mobmuplat.com, go to "rough doc" link.

Here are some things I´d like to improve:

1. I would love to hide everything in the main window, except the start button and the text-display.

2. To reset the patch, i must quit PD and restart the file again each time, would be lovely to find a way to reset everything within the patch.

3. is there an auto gain object to control the mic-input ? (+noise reduction maybe?)

4. I´ve found a RjDj-patch that triggered recordings by detecting a certain audio gain …of course I can´t find it anymore, but maybe there are better ways to „cut“ out the things people say?!

5.It would be awesome to understand how i can port this patch to mobmuplat/PdParty- if there is anyone out there who could help me to understand this, I´d be very thankful!

@pooopsi Well done! I have tidied it up a bit...... and might do more and post again when I have time.... and also look at the errors in the terminal.

Look inside [pd audio] [pd graphics] etc for the bits that look like they are missing. I just could not find my way around with such a big page on my laptop.
Some of your notes might be in the wrong place or in the wrong sub-patch though.

It is time for you to learn about abstractions....... and using [throw~] and [catch~] to clean up the audio part..... again, I might start that for you.

For Mobuplat it will have to be vanilla Pd....... usually possible to change quite easily..... I will look at that later as well.

To have only part of the patch visible, and also hide the connections you use the GOP........ graph on parent.
I have already done that for your parent patch. I have put everything in a sub-patch........[pd lostgeneration] and then right-clicked it and set the red window (graph area) that will be shown on the parent. Anything you put in the red box will appear on the window above [LostGeneration] patch window........
The size and position of the box can be adjusted (right-click patch window... properties).

The reset works for the text and as long the backgroud-wav doesn´t hit the end and starts to skip. also then some of the the recorded samples will play back (rec8.wav).

Somehow it´s really funny - feels like a monkey pressing the on/off in combination with the reset button to figure out how it is weired. ...def, will not turn off though.

so subpatches can be wrapped into one main-patch, but i still need the timer_set separately in the same folder, or can i simply subpatch that, too?

My next steps will be too timetrigger some effects like reverb/delay/voicepitch and put them onto the recordings or the live-signal, any advice for trippy combinations (or copypastable/modificatable trippy patches) highly welcome.

My dream is two synchronize multiple devices and instruct the players to swap information, that they simply repeat after they hear it on their headphones and tell to each other (and the secret recorder) - this will allow me to manipulate them into more expressive sentences with which i can later play to twist senses.

And one more question: if i would like to share this with people who don´t have pd, could i maybe wrap this patch with a trimmed down version from PD wich contains only the needed parts to run this? just not to make the whole package too big.

@pooopsi Just addressing the questions that I can reply to without delving deep into the patch........
Anything can be put into a sub-patch without problems..... it is just like having windows between rooms, all in the same house. Abstractions are like having a stock of jam jars in the larder, but the arguments are labels that say....... this one is raspberry flavour....... etc.
Yes you could make [timer_set] a sub-patch instead of an abstraction, but you cannot use arguments in that case. You would have to replace the $1 and $2 in every copy of the sub-patch with the current arguments for the abstraction...... a bad idea I think..... it's a backward move.

Yes, I think you could leave out all the libraries that you don't need..... and the doc folder.
Pd (in windows) does not need to be installed.... it can be portable...... maybe other OS's too but I don't know.
It is possible to lock patches as well...... they still work but cannot be "clicked".

You will need to learn about OSC messaging, or [netsend] and [netreceive]......... and [netsend~] and [netreceive~] for passing messages and audio between people. A bit of network understanding would help too..... wifi... security.... all of that.

@pooopsi Ok..... that didn't take too long, and tidying up allowed me to find what was throwing the terminal errors.
Once you understand [playbk] and [recorders] you will find this much easier to work with.... and maybe see straight away where any other errors might be.
They work in the same way as [timer_set]. Look in [pd audio] for the change.....!!
If you want to change anything in a recorder or playback abstraction then it will be much easier....... just change what is inside one of them and save it..... they will all change when you restart the main patch.

I have not put intro /outro as playback abstractions as they did not send to karao....... maybe an error, maybe not....

For now, I somehow have to readjust the karaoke-text with the recorder-timings again ... I am thinking about solving this by linking the recorder-bangs with a send/recieve to the karaokeprompter - Actually I think I solved it already like this with a "r karao"-object, but i can´t figure out anymore where the "s karao"-object is hiding - I found a search-function within PD, but I still can´t find it.
...Other solution would be a list for the timer with the same times as the recorder-start-times,
linked with the karaoke-next-text-button "textfile" , right?

Ok, so the problem seems to be: all recorder objects use the same abstraction (recorders.pd) but the first two recordings shouldn´t already trigger the karaoke - because I can´t deactivate the trigger for only one or two recorders without changing all, I simply changed the textfile and added one break to display a blank line for the first two triggers.

I want to adjust the program a bit and try to run it on a raspi to create some new magic. It will be part of an interactive installation where people will encounter their inner enemy and their inner clown... to expose the inner dialogue and give people the chance to observe themselves observing themselves... well I want to manipulate people to say certain things that I record and then create a dialogue with that samples using a deeper and a higher pitch... as this will be multiple recordings I am wondering about the easiest way, and I guess it is a recorder that already records with the pitch-effect over the audio... would be great if you could help me with an advice.

The other question I have, is a bit more complicated, but I am sure I will manage: to let the patch run on a Raspi and have sth external, like a button, or sensor activate the patch. Any threads/tutorials that you could recommend me?
