Quite sure you have desktop-effects runnig.. On an old laptop Ubuntu won't switch that on, but on newer laptops Ubuntu now puts desktop effects on by default.
Not sure if it helps, but I would really try out if it helps to switch this off:

System --> Preferences --> Appearence.
Click on 'Visuals' tab and try 'None'.
