Yes, for 3 channels you could use the R G and B pins. The colour bit depth of VGA will be good for a smooth waveform output.
Yes that's what I was thinking too
You would need to boost the voltage enough for your synth controls...... simple op-amps will do.
I do agree
The only problem will probably be the "black burst" in the analog output. A small capacitor would smooth that (and help with noise), as it occurs at 50-75Hz usually for VGA.
Yes. It would just be great if I could tell the DAC not to dial those bursts in the first place. I don't know how those do work. Whether they get information from somewhere or rely on built-in circuits locked on a particular sync signal rate, I don't know, I am way out of my field
Splitting the signal to a monitor you could have a very nice colourful display of your output as well!
Crazy cool

I am asking myself if I read your OP correctly.I read VCA (voltage controlled amplifier) instead of VGA.
Did you mean the analog video VGA output from your computer?
David.Yes, I did actually mean the common built-in analog VGA screen outlet that every computer would feature back in the days, prior to DVI . Wich both voltage range and lack of DC limitations would allow voltage control purposes (allegedly, i mean this is something I would come across a couple of times on analog synth DIYers forums, not knowing at all wether it could be an actual thing they are able to do.

Okay, thank you David. I am still processing your replies.
I think I'll go for a expensive-ish dedicated chip.
Is your guess that this kind of VGA hack never even existed ?
Have you ever heard of such a hack ?

Thank you David for your reply.
I guess I get it.
One more thing, though. What do you mean by "PWM will be bad news (noise on analog buss)."? -

Hi everyone,
I own a pulse generator and a function generator with voltage controlled functions (trigger/gate in, vco, vcf).
Operating them through the soundcard kind of works but not really, for the DACs send too low a voltage and have those capacitor / dc offset limitations you may know about, caps of wich i don't want to mess with (the soundcard is a cheap one but is the only one I own and works well as a soundcard as is).
I read here and there that one could use the DACs in the VGA outlet to drive analog synths, but I could never really find a thorough DIY report on such a hack.I wish I could find a way to get Pure Data to operate my analog gear through VGA.
Has anyone here ever tried this?Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.Sebastien.

I am new to Pd and to computing in general. Clumsy-english, naive questions. I don't mean to bother, please tell. I run Pd on windows 7 and about to run it on Linux
My question is when i click a bang in Pd, what actually happens under-the-hood so to speak? Is that a script-like message that is sent from Pd to the operating system ? Does Pd talk to the hardware directly ? What language do Pd and my computer share together ? Can I build patches by typing text somewhere instead of creating objects in the GUI window ? Can i monitor the scripted version of a patch building itself as I add objects in the GUI? Is "building" the proper english word?
Also can I run a patch by typing commands rather than clicking on things ? When running my patch, can i monitor the actual messages sent by Pd to the hardware or OS, and display them in a command-like window?
Not that I dislike the GUI at all, I actually like it exactly like it is, and coding is way out of my league, it's more that I am interested in learning how all of this works and also because I would like to feature this particular visual effect in a video piece I am currently working on.
Some actual english-speaking benefactor may fairly help by telling me the words he or she would use if was to search for ressources in english on this matter ?
Thank you.

"The table will stay the same length whether or not the speed is varied" ! Thanks David ! I should have figured this out. I guess you just triggered the shift i needed in my view on the matter.
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
This my first post. I send my respect to the community. And a happy new year. Please forgive my flawed English. I hope this post lands on the right spot too.I am new to it all, I am working on a patch here where I need to get transposable mono audio loops to be played in a row, i mean every loop when it reaches its end stops and triggers the following one and so on with variable playback speed on every loop.
Correct me if i'm wrong, ( read sf ) won't allow transposition when phasor won't stop after one shot playback. Series object and a timer won't allow the triggering of the loop to match the end of a loop which length has been tweaked
And I'd like the whole thing to be saveable !
Any help?.
Cheers.
