Well, how does one start PD with a lib setting?

Greetings fellow tiny-box-connectors
It looks like I may have a chance to perform soon using my PD patches I've been writing, but in order to o so, I ight have to solve a hardware issue first. My laptop has no D/A interface besides the headphone jack, which won't cut the mustard for performace. It also seems prudent to save CPU cycles by offloding mixing functions to hardware (thereby allowing aux sends et cetera). So what I will need is a peice of hardware that can recieve 4, 6, or 8 discrete channels, probably via firewire, and either can output four or more to a mixer, or has built-in mixing capacities including pans, aux sends, maybe built-in effects / EQ / et cetera. DOES SUCH A THING EXIST?!?
cheers

As a matter of fact, how do I operate externals at all?

Oh, and, if it works with PureData....... that is a big PLUS
