Hi everybody! This is my first post, but I've found so much helpful advice on this forum through other people's questions over the last few weeks. You guys are great!

My problem deals with....ugh....assigning and instantiating variables.

I'm making a patch that will cut a few seconds out of each song from a folder full of .wavs. I pasted all the file names into a .txt file and can traverse the list with [textfile]. I would like to assign the current line of [textfile] as a variable, so that I can read it to an array and once the clip is cut, bang [textfile] to assign the next .wav as the variable.

Something that DOESNT work might look like this

    [bang(
    |
    [textfile]
    |
[$8] (I know this object is for floats...what would go here?)
    |
    [read $8 array1(

I've read thoroughly through tutorials and I'm aware of the number/symbol distinction. I've looked into the [symbol] object to no avail. Just not seeing a way to periodically assign new values to a symbolic variable. Any hints?

I've attached my (somewhat buggy) patch for perusal - there are probably a few more problems that are in my patch (I haven't worked on writing each cut-up clip to disk, so advice on that would RULE), so feel free to point out just how inept I am...
