after installing the vm box and installing xubuntu. what is the correct way to install pd without having problems. if i install pd over the marketplace in ubuntu i get no gem and have issues after starting pd and the middle wheel on the mouse doesn't work !

and how can i use external audio interfaces ?

again... I am NOT very good at this, and someone else will probably be along with more solid advice, BUT, since I'm the first:

Instead of the marketplace (Ubuntu Software Center), I like to use Synaptic Package Manager. Apparently it is no longer installed by default, but I believe it can be installed from the Software Center. If not, it can be installed from a terminal.

Once you have Synaptic, search for pd, or pd- (to avoid all sorts of PDF programs!) Now, you can install Pd-Extended instead of Vanilla, and install GEM, and all sorts of goodies.

(in MY day, we had to install Pd-Extended by hand!)

I am able to choose my output device from Pd -> Media -> Audio Settings.

Middle mouse wheel? Ooh la-ti-da Mr Fancy Mouse Man! No, sorry, I have no idea why that wouldn't work.

If I remember well, Pd-extended as such is not in the Ubuntu repository. It can be downloaded as a .deb file from puredata.info or the nightly builds, and installed with gdebi. Once installed this way, it is in the package manager database and Synaptic will show it so you can view it's properties (installed files etc.) and do a complete removal if so desired.

Individual Pd-extended libraries (gem etc.) are available from the Ubuntu repository.

in Ubuntu, many users prefer using qjackctl or patchage to manage their interfaces. These are both frontends for various drivers, such as jackd or alsa. If your MOTU is a firewire device, pop on over to the ffado forms to check interoperability status.
