this is really starting to take time away from developing.

I know that my problems are all based on my ignorance of how linux works but i really need to install 0.42.5 on this laptop.

i had the 64bit version of the OS but had issues with either poke~ or some sort of 64bit table bug that played havoc with my looping system, so i switched to the 32bit version of ubuntu studio 12.04 but i have found no way to get 0.42.5 onto the system. 0.43.1 is easy but it uses way more resources and is generally more buggy than the former, in my experience. 0.42.5 is just more stable and smoother in all respects, but with all of the deprecated dependencies, it is impossible (for me) to install. i have collected and downloaded and installed, in order every single dependicies but towards the end of the process, they start to break things, which keeps the process from going beyond a certain point.

please! i really need to sort this out asap because it is destroying my productivity. i really dont want to reinstall windows xp, but that is looking like to only way that i am going to get a working system that i dont have to fiddle with constantly. what steps do i need to take to put 0.42.5 pd-extended onto ubuntu 12.04?

the silence on this issue speaks volumes in such a helpful community. i am gleaning that such an endeavor is probably a fools errand. not a problem. i just bought a blazingly fast ssd for my laptop and am currently partitioning it with windows 7 for "real work", linux for tinkering and one more linux partion for ubuntu studio where i can take the proper time neccessary to understand linux without having to depend on it right now.

although no one commented on this subject, i must say thank you anyway because the lack of input has led me to a more realistic solution.

i will report back with what i discover.

sorry - i am not so active at all
You can install puredata via aptitude, but dont know if this is the version you needed.

Also you can download the source and via make you can get it compiling and execute the pd file in the folder. If thats not working maybe you have to install some other packages. I dont know the details, because i never had an 64bit system.

as an update, i decided to replace my old harddrive with an SSD and every problem i had with windows went away instantly. i have now had my patches running day and night for a couple of days using a recent auto-build of 0.43.1 for win7, running on a 2ghz i7 based laptop with 8gb ram. and it is perfect! the GUI isnt laggy, the number boxes are updating continuously and smoothly, the audio is stable with no cpu spikes and at 4ms latency with the soundcard set tp 64 samples using asio4all (something is wonky with my komplete audio 6 interface but the internal audio sounds good enough at low enough latency that i am not bothered), and GEM works, although i have not really pushed it too hard in that area yet. the cpu lingers between 5-24%, on one core!

I didnt think that a hard drive upgrade would have this much effect on the system performance. i always thought of pd as software that spent most of its time in ram and that hard drive access was reserved mostly for tables and other files, but not so much for audio and message objects. but i guess it would make sense though. well anyway, for the first time, i can say that this is now the system i always though i could have with pd, but kept alluding me for ever changing reasons. SSD's are great!!

Hey onyx, I've been away for a while so I missed this. But I was wondering what the problem was that you were having with [poke~]? I was able to build Pd-extended 0.43 on Kubuntu 64 a little while back, and I haven't had any major problems. But I do have some unfinished patches that use [poke~]. Just want to be prepared for any problems when I get back to working on them.

Btw, make sure you back up that SSD frequently. It may be better now, but a while back I knew a number of people who had those things die pretty quickly, and data recovery was way more expensive.

i think it is a table bug rather than poke~. i just shelved linux for the time being and reinstalled win7 64bit. with the ssd, its all lightening fast. best it has ever run on any OS.

i have also read varying reports so i back up my patch folder and am not in that big of a hurry to install much else besides a web browser and my cad software. but so far, wow! its like getting 50% more computer and this computer is already fdast as hell! (core i7 2ghz, 8gb ram)

i will get back into the linux stuff in a couple of weeks, after i finish these synths and effects patches.

If you want 64bit you could also search for pd-l2ork. It's a very nice version and it's based on 0.42.5. It has cool things like chord inspector, wiimote abs, standalone window for console, runs fast. For 64bits, it's this http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/data/pd/Pd-l2ork-full-x86_64-20120802.tar.bz2 . Pd-l2ork now needs tkpng. I don't know if ubuntu 12.04 has it(i use Precise Puppy Linux(compatible with .deb binaries)) , if it doesn't, search it in the package manager.

It's a tarball, extract it and run the usual sudo make install. Run it with pd-l2ork.

maybe i will investigate both of those in the next weeks. right now win7 and 0.43.1 is working so good i cant believe it but will need to switch to linux to distribute.
