Hi

I'm a little puzzled that my sound files don't seem to show up when using a [openpanel]-[print] command to find sound files. When I record a simple test 'hello.wav' it automatically puts itself in the home folder thus :

- symbol /Users/joehigham/hello.wav

And of course the sound file opens no problem. However, when I move a sound file to new folder and again use the 'openpanel' command - cut and paste the new path into a [message.box( as such.

- symbol /Users/joehigham/Music/pure data/recording patches/hello.wav

I just get either :

1)error: data/recording: no such table
... you might be able to track this down from the Find menu.

2. error: soundfiler_read: /Users/joehigham/Music/pure data/recording patches/hello.wav
   : No such file or directory

Can someone explain where I'm going wrong, please?

p.s. I'm cut and pasting '/Users/etc/etc/hello.wav'

I haven't tested this but it could be because you've got spaces in your filepath.

Try using underscores instead of spaces e.g:

• symbol /Users/joehigham/Music/pure_data/recording_patches/hello.wav

Yes, I also thought that and of course I tried it, but didn't work .... unfortunately.

What are you trying to do?
[openpanel] is an interactive file choosing menu..

[symbol /path/to/directory<
|
[openpanel]

You should not include the name of the file .. just the dir where it lives

If you're reading into [soundfiler]

[read /path/to/file<
|
[soundfiler]

then you need the full file path ie. including file name

That's the whole path as printed out in the Pd window. My question is why doesn't it work, or is there something wrong in my path name? Normally using the

[openpanel]
|
[print]

I should be able to cut and paste path name into a message box ..... or so I thought!

The answer was that I (probably) needed to rename files without the spaces in their original directories. So, pure data became Pd, and recording patches became recording_patches, etc. I did so and it found the files immediately. Problem solved for today.

Thanks Jwif, I should of tried it first, but somehow forgot to change the 'actual' file names on the computer. Of course, the two didn't match ... whoops!

Just in case you aren't aware, you can also do this:

[openpanel]
|
[read $1 array1(
|
[soundfiler]

When you do it this way, the $1 in the message box acts as a variable that gets replaced by whatever is coming in its inlet -- in this case, the file and path. You also don't have to worry about spaces in the path here, because Pd already knows that the space is part of the path, so it treats it as one long string. When there are spaces in message boxes, there currently isn't a way for Pd to tell whether or not the space is part of the filename or if it is just separating another item in the box, so it just assumes it's a separator. There are ways around -- you can get away with using spaces -- but they're a bit tricky.
