I am new to pd.
I tried to make a simple patch to start off. I attached an osc~ object at 440 Hertz and attached it to a dac~. This should make a simple sine wave, but when I turn the sound on, I hear a sine wave accompanied by several clicks, one after the other, at seemingly random intervals of time.
Can someone explain the problem to me and possibly give me solutions?

You might need to increase the latency in the Audio Settings.

OK, I've done that, and it works fine for oscillators without filters, but I've plugged in a band pass filter, and it makes the same noise when I use a slider to change the value of the frequencies that pass. This sound has become very impractical. Any suggestions?

what filter do you use? [bp~]? you can try to smooth out the values from the slider with [line], something like this:
slider

[$1 20(
|
[line 0 1]

frequency inlet of bp~but if you want to modulate the cutoff frequency with an osc~ or something like this, you'd better use a filter with a signal inlet for cutoff (vcf~ for example)
