I'm trying to put together a patch where after a manual [bang], it records one minute of audio coming in from the adc~ and then automatically plays the recording back.

I've looked at [soundfiler] and [tabread] but am unclear on how to write a recording directly into [soundfiler]. The examples I've seen deal with writing data or opening pre-recorded audio files.

I'm sure I'm on the right track, just getting myself confused....

[soundfiler] doesn't actually hold audio data. It loads/saves audio files to/from arrays or tables. What you want is to write audio data to an array from [adc~]. You can do this with [tabwrite~]. When you bang [tabwrite~], it will begin writing samples to the array until it is filled. So if you have an array that is exactly one minute long, all you'll have to do is bang the [tabwrite~].

I'm having trouble understanding how you set a specific length of time using an array. I've read the control examples in the Pd browser and understand the continuous resizing but not how to set a constraint of (in this example) a one minute recording?

The size of the array is the number of samples that it contains. You probably are recording new audio at a sample rate of 44.1k, which means there are 44100 samples per every second of audio. You will want (44100 * 60) samples of audio all together to get one minute.

So you will need to set the array's size to 2646000 samples. Also, how are you playing back the array? If you use [tabplay~] I guess it will be fairly simple. You could also could use [tabread~] to have the table read by a [phasor~] object that is sent into a [*~ 2646000] so that it reads through every sample.

You will need to make sure that phasor only reads through the array once per minute, so set its rate to (1/60), which equals about 0.166667

Thanks, but I still don't understand what I physically need to type in order to create an array that will do this.

I know I'm asking some pretty basic questions here - if this is all covered in Pd browser somewhere could you point me towards it or attach a quick example? That would be really helpful.

To load a file into a table:

• create an array (look in the objects menu)
• create a [soundfiler] object
• send a correct [read( message to the soundfiler (rightclick it to see its help file). If you're on windows don't forget that whitespace is not allowed in filenames and replace backslashes (\) with forward slashes (/).
