ok, so i've just installed pd on win7, but it won't start, i can see it in the running processes but nothing happens. i've also tried compatibility issues option in win7 but unsuccessfully.

should pd run normally on win7? any solutions?

I'm running win7 and have had no issues with PD vanilla or extended.

One thing to note is that when i start PD up, windows asks me if i want to give it admin rights so that it can modify files on my computer (unsure quite why this is)

perhaps your windows settings are configured so that it will automatically refuse the request without telling you. try right clicking on the executable and hitting run as administrator

yes i did that, but it still kinda starts but doesn't appear (it's listed as running program)

Hm, afraid I dont know why that might be. I'll have a play around later tonight and try to investigate for you
