This question (or similar) gets brought up from time to time, and I thought I'd post this for those still looking for an answer. Hans recently mentioned on the list that there is an abstraction in Pd-extended called [get-audio-dialog] that can be used to save your audio settings in a patch. Might be handy for those (like myself) who use different interfaces depending on what the patch is used for.
