right now, I use multiple message boxes with a single bang and [makenote] to accomplish to make chords. surely there is a more efficient way to do this. I've tried lists but no go.

there are many ways you could go, lists would be one of them. where is your problem using lists? you can also use an array to store note values (e.g. a scale) and use [tabread] to read out the triads. i build something like this some while ago, have a look at that thread:
