im trying to open/close patches from a top level patch with an internal message. I've seen that there is a "open" command that takes 2 symbol arguements, (aka banging a message box that says [;pd open symbol symbol]) but i have no clue what these arguements are!

this is the best doc i've found.

has anyone figured this out?

ok one more question, can i open the patcher with some creation arguements?

actually let me elaborate on my intentions. If i have more than one instance of a patch open i want to be able to send them separate messages. As i understand namecanvas can do this but it is a little confusing it would be much easier to initialize the patch with a number arguement and then that patch only listens to messages that start with that number.

ok so experimentation leads me to $0. This is nice and will work but is also a little dirty. If anyone knows how to open a patch using the open command with creation arguments that would be a lot of help.

What if you just create these patches as abstractions and give them creation arguments that way?

I'm not sure if one can give non-abstractions a unique id when it loads, unless you hard code it. ARe you trying to do dynamic patching perchance?

Save your patch including $1, $2... as creation arguments and add its path to >file>path . Then you can add new objects with creation arguments based on the previous patch into another "host" patch:

[obj x y my-patch argument1 argument2...<
|
[send pd-host_patch]

You should be able to build internal messaging systems based on a unique creation argument of your choice.

ok i get that. yes i'm doing dynamic patching, i think that $0 will do the job for addressing each patch but now im trying to route audio with throw and catch so the object messages will be very usefull thank you.

Sorry for bringing up that old post.

But: I couldn't use a relative path for [; pd open <patch.pd> <path>(

I've put a [declare] object but it doesn't work either. Only from /home/martin/... on it worked.

Is there a way around it?

Relative paths should be ok.

Remember that it can be relative to pd or the patch.
Also you have to reopen the patch for [declare] to have any effect.

Hey, sorry for reopening this old post but seeing that the topic has already been created I thought it would be better to post here than to create a new one.
I'm trying to use the open command to open a patch. I've got:

[;pd open <nameofpatch.pd> <path>(

just as mentioned before, but my PD windows is showing the following error every time I try to open it:

<dialog1.pd>: read failed; Device not configured

Does anyone know what the problem might be?
